Aquileia

One of the great cities of the Roman world now sleeps beneath a lagoon-side village, and Aquileia lets you walk straight into it. Fourth-century mosaic floors glow under the basilica’s nave, Roman streets and houses surface between the modern lanes, and the river port that launched a thousand ships still traces its line. UNESCO listed the ensemble in 1998.

Why visit

Aquileia is the most important Roman site in northern Italy and still largely unexcavated, which gives it a rare atmosphere: antiquity keeps appearing under your feet rather than behind glass. Founded as a frontier colony in 181 BC, it grew into a port metropolis of perhaps one hundred thousand people, and after Rome’s fall it became the cradle of Christianity in the Adriatic north. Travellers come for the basilica’s vast early Christian mosaic floor, the largest of its kind in the Western world’s early church, for the riverside remains of the Roman harbour, and for the state archaeological museum that gathers the city’s sculpture, glass and amber. The lagoon light, cicadas and slow bicycles complete the appeal.

Character and history

Rome planted Aquileia as a military colony to guard its north-eastern frontier, and geography made it rich: rivers linked it to the Danube, roads to the Alps, and its merchants traded Baltic amber, Norican metal and its own celebrated wine. Under the empire it became a fortress city of the first rank — it withstood a months-long siege in 238 — and by the late fourth century ranked among the great cities of the world in contemporary lists. In 452 Attila the Hun burned it; fleeing inhabitants, tradition says, helped seed the lagoon settlements that became Venice and Grado.

From the rubble rose something almost as remarkable: a patriarchate. The basilica’s first churches were built just after the Edict of Milan in 313, and their mosaic floors survive beneath the present building, which Patriarch Poppo rebuilt in the eleventh century and later prelates reworked in Gothic times. The patriarchate ruled much of Friuli for centuries until its suppression in 1751. Passed to Italy only after the First World War, Aquileia today is a small town whose streets sit atop the second-largest Roman city never fully excavated.

What to see

Begin at the Patriarchal Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta: the fourth-century floor mosaic stretches across the entire nave, a carpet of fishermen, donors, birds and Jonah stories unmatched anywhere. Descend into the Crypt of Frescoes, painted around the ninth century beneath the presbytery, and climb the Bell Tower of the Basilica of Aquileia for the rooftops and lagoon. Beside the piazza, the Baptistery with Südhalle preserves an early Christian bathing hall with its own mosaics, and the Bishop’s Palace and Domus exposes Roman houses beneath the patriarchal residence.

The Roman city threads through town: the Roman Forum of Aquileia, the Ancient River Port along the Natisone, the Fondo CAL – Roman Houses, the Fondo Pasqualis – Ancient Markets, the paved Decumanus of Aratria Galla with its dedicatory inscription, and the open-air Early Christian Necropolis. Don’t miss the elegant Domus of Tito Macro. Two museums crown the visit: the National Archaeological Museum of Aquileia in a former convent, and the Early Christian Museum with mosaics and inscriptions from the Theodorian basilica and Beligna.

How to experience

Rent a bicycle at the tourist office: Aquileia is flat, and cycling between the scattered excavations — port, forum, necropolis — along the river and orchard lanes is the way the site is meant to be read. Give the basilica unhurried time in the morning, then finish at the archaeological museum in the cool of the afternoon. Combine with the Grado lagoon road, whose wetlands begin just south of town, or with a wine detour toward the Colli Orientali. In summer, the basilica hosts evening concerts — a matchless setting.

Practical planning

Aquileia lies between Udine and Grado, about an hour from Trieste and Venice by car; the nearest rail stations are at Cervignano-Aquileia-Grado, with a short bus connection.
