Potenza Picena

Potenza Picena is a two-level town in the Macerata hinterland: a medieval hill village of churches, gates and belvederes — called Monte Santo until the 1860s — and, three kilometres downhill, Porto Potenza, a Blue Flag seaside district with sandy beaches and a sixteenth-century watchtower, all named to honour the ancient Roman colony of Potentia.

Why visit

This is a destination for travellers who like their Italy layered and local. The hill town offers a genuine centro storico with twenty-odd churches’ worth of skyline, a piazza framed by noble palaces and a theatre inside the town hall; the coast adds beach days without resort excess; and between the two lie vineyards, a historic mill and the terraced gardens of Villa Buonaccorsi, among the finest Italianate gardens in the region. It suits a slow base — close to Recanati, the Conero coast and the Sibillini — and rewards visitors who follow the town’s own walking itineraries.

Character and history

The name is a deliberate act of memory. A Roman colony founded in 184 BC as Potentia near the mouth of the river Potenza was destroyed in the fifth century; the rebuilt settlement on a nearby hill was known in the early Middle Ages as Monte or Castel San Giovanni, razed in 1116 by Emperor Henry V and rebuilt in 1128 as Montesanto. Only on 21 December 1862 did the council adopt the present name, recalling the Roman city and the Piceni who farmed this land before Rome. The medieval hill town keeps its walls, partly consolidated in recent times, and a silhouette once defined by twenty-seven churches and their bell towers. Below it grew Porto Potenza, today the largest built-up area of the comune, whose beach carries the Blue Flag and whose Borgo Marinaro preserves the old fishermen’s cottages along the “Marinai d’Italia” promenade. The Piramide de Mayo on the upper town commemorates the town’s long ties with Argentina.

What to see

Begin with the town’s own itinerary: the Church of Madonna della Neve outside the walls, entry through the Porta Marina, then the Church of San Francesco and the Pincio Belvedere for the view. The Piramide de Mayo marks the Argentina connection before you reach Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, framed by noble palaces and the Town Hall; the Town Hall contains artworks and, inside it, the Bruno Mugellini Municipal Theatre, named for the local-born musician honoured each year by the Mugellini Festival. The Collegiate Church of Santo Stefano anchors the upper Corso, the Former Church of Sant’Agostino now resounds as the Scarfiotti auditorium with its Fedeli organ, and the Former Church of Santa Caterina houses the municipal photographic archive. Seek out the Porta Galiziano and the Fonte Galiziano, the Civic Tower, and the old Jewish quarter. Below, visit Villa Buonaccorsi with its terraced Italian gardens on guided openings, take a guided tour of the Mulino Marzetti water mill, and finish at the sea with the sixteenth-century Port Tower and the Laghetti Wildlife Oasis.

How to experience

Split your time deliberately: mornings in the borgo when the light is clear and the belvederes are empty, afternoons at the beach or in the gardens. Book the scheduled guided visits — Villa Buonaccorsi’s gardens and the Marzetti mill open only at set times, listed on the official tourism site, which also provides walking and cycling itineraries and a downloadable guide with Spotify audio-guides for the tower and gates. Time a visit for July for the sea at its best and the summer events, or for the Mugellini music festival; September gives warm water and quieter streets.

Practical planning

The town lies on the Adriatic railway between Ancona and Civitanova, with a station at Porto Potenza, and is reached by road from the A14 at Civitanova Marche or Porto Recanati. The hill village is steep and partly stepped; park outside the walls. Beaches at Porto Potenza are mostly sandy with short rocky stretches, and the district has earned recognition for accessible tourism. Museum, villa and mill visits depend on scheduled openings — always check the official tourism portal for times. Two or three nights cover the town and coast comfortably, with the Conero parks and Recanati within a short drive.
