Recanati

Recanati, “the city of the Infinite”, rides the crest of a hill between the Potenza and Musone valleys, its bell towers visible far across the Marche countryside. This is the town of Giacomo Leopardi, whose family palace and hilltop garden still draw pilgrims of poetry, and of the tenor Beniamino Gigli, with museums, opera house and Renaissance churches besides.

For readers, Recanati is a literary pilgrimage: you can stand in the library where Leopardi studied, walk the garden that entered his verses, and climb the open hill that gave its name to “L’Infinito”. But the town rewards more than poetry-lovers. The civic galleries hold Lorenzo Lotto, a handsome theatre honours the tenor Gigli, and a museum tells the epic of Marche emigration. Compact, steep and atmospheric, it pairs naturally with the nearby coast and Loreto, and its hilltop position makes every street a view.

Character and history

Recanati grew on the ridge of a hill whose crest is nearly level, commanding the routes between the two river valleys. By the Renaissance it was a cultural magnet: men of letters such as the humanist Antonio Bonfini passed through, and celebrated painters — Lorenzo Lotto among them, later Guercino and Caravaggio — came to work here, while a local school of bronze founders, led by the Lombardi family from the mid-sixteenth century, made the town an important casting centre serving nearby Loreto. Into this refined world Giacomo Leopardi was born on 29 June 1798, first child of Count Monaldo Leopardi and Adelaide Antici, in the family palace reshaped in its present form by the architect Carlo Orazio Leopardi around the mid-eighteenth century. His father’s library, over twenty thousand volumes including incunabula, became the poet’s universe. The other name on the town’s honours board is Beniamino Gigli, the great tenor born here on 20 March 1890, remembered today in the museum inside the Teatro Persiani.

The Leopardi House Museum is the heart of the town: still inhabited by Leopardi descendants, it opens the poet’s library, a permanent museum and, since the 2020 restoration, parts of the piano nobile and the apartments he shared with his brothers, on an itinerary called “Ove Abitai Fanciullo” that includes the garden recalled in “Le ricordanze”. Above the town lies the Hill of the Infinite, the open slope with its visitable orchard associated with the poem “L’Infinito”. On Piazza Giacomo Leopardi, the poet’s statue stands before the town hall, and the Torre del Borgo hosts the city museum. The Civic Museums of Villa Colloredo Mels keep the picture gallery, with its Lorenzo Lotto holdings, alongside an archaeological section. Under the same circuit come the Museum of Marche Emigration, the Beniamino Gigli Museum and the Museum of Music, both housed in the Teatro Persiani, the town’s historic theatre. On the ridge stands the Recanati Cathedral, co-cathedral of San Flaviano.

Build the day around Leopardi’s geography. Start at the house museum in the morning — the rooms are not air-conditioned, so summer visits are best early — then walk up to the Hill of the Infinite to read the poem with the view that prompted it. After lunch, take in Villa Colloredo Mels at leisure, then the theatre’s two music museums; if opera or concert season is running, the Persiani programme is worth checking in advance. Literary travellers should also find the Piazzetta del Sabato del Villaggio below the palace, where the poems’ everyday scenes unfold. Evenings belong to the piazza, with the statue of the poet and the town’s café life.

Recanati is reached from the Adriatic railway via Porto Recanati station and buses up the hill, or by car from the A14 at Civitanova Marche or the coastal road; parking sits just below the centre, and the town is steep, so comfortable shoes matter. The house museum, hill and civic museums post their own hours and combined tickets — check the official sites, since schedules change seasonally and the palace is a lived-in home. Spring and autumn offer the clearest air for the hill views; June brings the feast of patrons San Vito and San Flaviano, and summer fills the calendar of the museum circuit.
