Fermo spreads across the Sabulo hill a few kilometres inland, capital of Italy’s youngest province and among the Marche’s oldest cities. Below its cathedral-crowned summit lies an Augustan-age network of Roman cisterns vast enough to walk through; above it, a Renaissance piazza reckoned among the most beautiful in central Italy. Why visit

Fermo rewards travellers who like their art history subterranean as well as hanging on walls. The Roman Cisterns — some thirty vaulted rooms of first-century hydraulic engineering, among the largest and best preserved of their kind in Italy — lie beneath the old town, cool and brick-lit, a scope and atmosphere no surface monument matches. On top of the hill, the Gothic cathedral looks over the Girfalco park and the tiled roofs rolling to the coast, while halfway down, the arcaded Piazza del Popolo assembles the Priori palace, the civic library and café life under sixteenth-century brick loggias. The museum circuit is compact and serious — a Rubens, an Enlightenment map room with a 1713 globe, an opera theatre of 1791 — and ten minutes away the borgo of Torre di Palme hangs between sea and sky above its own protected wood. It is a full-day city that never feels like a checklist.

Character and history

Firmum Picenum was already ancient when Rome made it a Latin colony in 264 BC, having grown around proto-Villanovan burial grounds whose finds now fill the archaeological museum. Its hilltop position made it a stubborn prize: the medieval town was besieged repeatedly — by imperial armies, by Frederick II, by Manfred — before becoming a free commune in 1199 and passing to the Papal States in 1550. Prosperity in the Renaissance and the papal centuries built the city you see: the Priori palace raised over three hundred years, the arcaded piazza, the Teatro dell’Aquila of 1791, and a tradition of learning embodied in the Spezioli library with its prints and drawings cabinet. Modern Fermo is a provincial capital only since 2009, when the new province of Fermo was carved out of Ascoli Piceno — a change the city had sought for generations — and it wears its administrative maturity lightly, spilling market days, university life and summer festivals down the hill towards the beaches of Lido di Fermo and Marina Palmense.

Begin underground at the Roman Cisterns of Fermo, entered near Via degli Aceti, then climb to the Fermo Cathedral on the Girfalco, its Gothic Istrian-stone facade holding a 1348 rose window, and the adjoining Diocesan Museum of Fermo, home of the illuminated Messale de Firmonibus. Descend to Piazza del Popolo for the Palazzo dei Priori, whose picture gallery keeps Rubens’s Adoration of the Shepherds and whose Sala del Mappamondo preserves the great globe of 1713, then across the square to the Romolo Spezioli Civic Library. A short walk brings you to the Teatro dell’Aquila, one of the Marche’s largest historic theatres, and the Fermo Civic Archaeological Museum in the former San Francesco complex. Round out the day with the science collections of the Science Museums of Palazzo Paccaroni, the quiet Church of San Filippo Neri, the green terraces of Villa Vitali, and the cliff-edge Borgo of Torre di Palme with its own small Archaeological Museum; the romanesque Abbey of San Marco alle Paludi waits in the lowland on the way to the sea.

Do as the Fermani do: morning coffee under the arcades of Piazza del Popolo, cisterns while the day is cool, and the cathedral at sunset when the coast shimmers from the Girfalco. Book the combined museum ticket that stitches the circuit together, and check locally — parts of the cisterns close periodically for maintenance, so timing matters. On the third Thursday of the month the theatre opens for late visits alongside the market. Plan around mid-August if you can, when the Cavalcata dell’Assunta processes in historical dress for the patronal feast; the FermHAmente science festival fills autumn, and the Postacchini violin competition fills concert seasons. Eat Piceno style: olive all’ascolana, stuffed lasagne of the Marche, and the region’s brodetto, ideally with Falerio from the hills behind the coast.

Practical planning

Fermo is reached from the A14 at Porto San Giorgio and by a branch line from that coastal station up the hill; Ancona’s airport lies about an hour north. The centre is hilly and stepped, with car parks below the walls and pedestrian lanes above — comfortable shoes are the first essential.
