Cingoli

Cingoli sits on the summit of Monte Circe at 631 metres, its historic centre ending in a terrace so generous that locals call the town the Balcony of the Marches. Birthplace of a pope and of Caesar’s lieutenant Titus Labienus, it pairs medieval lanes and a fine picture gallery with the blue sheet of the Castreccioni lake just below.

Cingoli earns its place in the Marche canon for the view alone: from the Balcony of the Marches viewpoint at the old town’s edge, the landscape unrolls from the Apennine ridges to the Adriatic coast, a panorama that gives the town its nickname and its unusual, airy confidence. But the terrace is only the opening act. The medieval centre holds a late-baroque cathedral, a Dominican church with Renaissance tombs, a convent precinct turned cultural quarter, and the Donatello Stefanucci Municipal Art Gallery, whose namesake painter chronicled exactly these hillsides. Add the lakeside country below the hill — beaches, sailing and an artificial lake ringed by woodland — and Cingoli becomes a rare Marche base that offers both a museum morning and an afternoon by the water. Recognition follows: the town flies the Touring Club’s Bandiera Arancione and counts among I Borghi più belli d’Italia, and national media crowned it Borgo dei Borghi in 2026.

Character and history

The hill was fortified in 63 BCE by Titus Labienus, the Picene-born general who served under Julius Caesar before crossing to Pompey’s side — an episode recorded since antiquity and still the town’s claim to a Roman municipium before the long dominion of the Papal States. Its most famous son arrived much later: Francesco Saverio Castiglioni, born here in the eighteenth century, who reigned as Pope Pius VIII from 1829 to 1830, a connection the town keeps alive in its Castiglioni palaces and civic collections. Cingoli’s later centuries were quiet ones of olives, wheat and hillside farming — it remains a member of the Città dell’Olio network — and of artists: the twentieth-century landscape painter Donatello Stefanucci made the surrounding Conero-and-Sibillini vistas his life’s subject, and the town honours him with its picture gallery. Today the population is spread across a hill town and dozens of scattered hamlets, giving visits a two-texture rhythm of piazza and countryside.

The natural circuit runs from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, where the Cingoli Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta stands beside the Cingoli Town Hall. A few steps away, the Church of San Domenico ranks among the town’s principal historic churches, while at Santa Caterina the old convent now hosts exhibitions and the cultural programme. The cultural quarter around Via Mazzini gathers the Ascari Public Library, the picture gallery with its rooms of Stefanucci landscapes, and the Hortus open-air theatre in the courtyard. Above town, the hillside Sanctuary of Santa Sperandia, honouring the co-patroness whose feast is kept each September, rewards the short drive with quiet and views; the baroque Church of San Filippo Neri completes the centre. How to experience

Time your visit for the late afternoon: walk the centre while the light is still on the stone, then join the local ritual of watching the sun go down from the balcony terrace. On a clear day the line of the coast is unmistakable. Devote another half-day to the lake country below — the Castreccioni lake, formed by a dam on the Esino river, is a summer leisure spot and a bare, photogenic shore in the off-season. Food-wise, look for the olive oil that gives the town its Città dell’Olio status and the hearty pasta and meat cooking of the Macerata hills, best with a glass of Verdicchio. September is event season, with the concert for Santa Sperandia and open-air performances in the Hortus theatre.

Cingoli lies about half an hour by road from Macerata and the A14 corridor; a car is the practical choice, with parking at the edges of the old town and everything inside reached on foot.
