Ravenna

Ravenna holds the finest Byzantine mosaics in the Western world, sealed inside eight UNESCO-listed buildings from the fifth and sixth centuries. Once the capital of the Western Roman Empire and later of Byzantine Italy, it also sheltered Dante through his final years. Add the Adriatic beaches and the wetlands beyond, and the city covers a remarkable range.

Why visit

No other city in Italy concentrates so much early Christian art in walkable space. In a single morning you can stand beneath the star-spangled blue vault of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, face the imperial procession of Justinian and Theodora at San Vitale, and watch apostles circle the dome of the Neonian Baptistery, all within a few hundred metres of each other. The mosaics are not museum fragments behind glass; they remain where they were made, still doing their original work of overwhelming the eye. Beyond the art, Ravenna offers a literary pedigree through Dante, an archaeological record of its port and palaces, and a short drive to sand and sea. It is a compact, confident city that deserves at least two full days.

Character and history

Ravenna’s rise was strategic. In 402 Emperor Honorius moved the Western Roman capital here from Milan, trusting the lagoon-like setting and its sea links through the harbour of Classe; the last Western emperor was deposed in this city in 476. The Ostrogothic king Theodoric ruled Italy from Ravenna from 493, building his own palatium and mausoleum, and after the Byzantine reconquest of 540 the city became the seat of the Exarchate, Byzantine Italy’s government, which is why its churches speak Constantinople’s artistic language rather than Rome’s. Eight monuments from these eras, inscribed by UNESCO in 1996, form the heart of any visit. After the Lombard conquest of the eighth century the city slipped into a long second rank, ruled by the Da Polenta lords, Venice and the papacy in turn. Dante, exiled from Florence, completed the Divine Comedy here and died in 1321; Ravenna has guarded his remains ever since. The city was heavily bombed in the Second World War and liberated in November 1944, then rebuilt around its incomparable core.

The five UNESCO milestones inside the centre come first: the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia with its deep-blue star vaults, the Basilica of San Vitale with the imperial panel portraits, the Neonian Baptistery, the processional mosaics of the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and the Archiepiscopal Chapel of St. Andrew, reached through the Archiepiscopal Museum. Out in Classe, the vast Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe pairs its glowing apse with the excavated Ancient Port of Classe and the archaeological storytelling of the Classis Ravenna museum. The Ostrogothic era survives in the monolithic-domed Mausoleum of Theodoric, while the Arian court left the Arian Baptistery. Dante’s memory anchors the quarter around the Tomb of Dante Alighieri, the Dante Museum and the walled Quadrarco di Braccioforte; nearby, the flooded crypt of the Basilica of San Francesco lets you watch goldfish swim over ancient pavement. Underground, the Domus of the Stone Carpets reveals fourteen mosaic floors of a private Byzantine house beneath the church of Sant’Eufemia, and the MAR Ravenna Art Museum carries the mosaic tradition into contemporary work.

How to experience

Buy the combined monument ticket at the tourist office or online; it covers the principal UNESCO buildings and saves both money and queueing. Space the sites out: mosaic fatigue is genuine, and two or three monuments per session lets each register. Consider an evening visit in summer, when the city runs nocturnal programmes and the lit interiors feel even more luminous against the dark. Make time for Classe by bike or bus, and balance the art with the seafront at Marina di Ravenna or the delta wetlands to the north. The annual Ravenna Festival brings music into the monuments, and mosaic workshops around the city offer hands-on courses for travellers who want to understand the craft from the inside.

Practical planning

Ravenna sits on a rail spur from Bologna and Ferrara, about an hour from either; the centre is flat and entirely walkable, and bicycles extend the range to Classe and the beach. The UNESCO monuments observe split hours with a midday closure on many days, and some, like Galla Placidia, admit visitors in timed slots, so the official ravennamosaici.it site and turismo.ra.it should be checked when planning. The tomb of Dante is free to enter. Summer is lively and hot; late spring and September offer the best balance. Book accommodation ahead during the Ravenna Festival and around August weekends.

Two neighbours round out a Ravenna itinerary naturally: the wetlands and lagoons of the Po Delta begin just to the north, and the Riviera city of Rimini, with its Roman and Fellini heritage, lies down the coast to the south-east.
