Venice

Venice is a city built on water, its 118 islands stitched together by bridges, canals and a thousand years of statecraft. Capital of a maritime republic that ruled the Mediterranean, it preserves that power in marble: a ducal palace, Byzantine mosaics, confraternity halls hung with Old Masters, and ordinary campi where laundry crosses the same light as Tiepolo’s ceilings.

Why visit

No city rewards the walker like Venice. The essentials are global icons — St Mark’s Square, the mosaicked basilica, the Doge’s Palace — but the deeper pleasure is the fabric between them: a gondola shipyard still at work, the Rialto Market at dawn, parish churches holding single paintings worth a journey, and the quiet sestieri where the sound of water replaces traffic entirely. Art of the first rank fills state museums and confraternity halls alike, from the Gallerie dell’Accademia to Tintoretto’s cycle at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. Venice demands slow pace and rewards it like nowhere else in Europe.

Character and history

Venice was born of refuge and became an empire. Fleeing mainland invasions, settlers moved onto the lagoon islands, and by the early Middle Ages a merchant city had emerged whose relics of St Mark — carried from Alexandria in 829 — gave it a patron, a myth and a piazza. The present basilica was begun in 1063 under Doge Domenico Contarini, its mosaic decoration starting within a decade and the church consecrated in 1094; the Fourth Crusade of 1204 then poured the marbles and spoils of Constantinople into its fabric, including the four bronze horses that still preside over the loggia.

Government took architectural form across the piazza. The Doge’s Palace grew from a ninth-century stronghold into a masterpiece of Gothic civil architecture, its successive wings rebuilt from 1340 onward, its magistracies and councils painting the machinery of a republic that bound its doge — elected for life yet constrained by his promissione — into ritual impotence beside the collective state. Fires of 1574 and 1577 tested it; the Bridge of Sighs of 1614 tied it to the New Prisons. The Republic fell in 1797, when Napoleon’s armies entered the city and the last doge abdicated; Venice then passed between Austrian and Italian rule before becoming the museum-city, and living city, it is today — its churches of the Frari and Santi Giovanni e Paolo still the pantheon of its painters and doges, its Arsenal the remembered engine of its naval power.

What to see

Start at the basilica and climb to the Museum and Loggia of the Horses, then queue early for the palace, taking in the Pala d’Oro and the Campanile. Cross the Grand Canal by the Rialto Bridge and the Academy Bridge. Reserve at least half a day for painting: the Accademia’s Venetian school, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection for the moderns, and the churches of the Chorus circuit — Santa Maria dei Miracoli, San Sebastiano with Veronese’s tomb, Madonna dell’Orto with Tintoretto. See the baroque drama of the Salute from the Zattere and Palladio’s Redentore from across the Giudecca canal. In Castello, walk the Riva degli Schiavoni toward the Arsenal; in Cannaregio, visit the Ghetto and its museum and synagogues. Fit pieces are everywhere: the Scala Contarini del Bovolo, the Royal Gardens, La Fenice, the Querini Stampalia with Scarpa’s garden, and the Armenian monastery island of San Lazzaro.

How to experience

Walk everywhere; vaporetti are for the canals and the islands, and getting lost is the point. Visit churches at off-hours when the light is low, buy museum passes if you are seeing several civic sites, and book timed entries for the basilica and palace in season. Ride the No. 1 vaporetto down the Grand Canal at dusk as a cheap grand tour. Eat standing at a bacaro with cicchetti, sit for one serious meal, and let at least one day follow a single sestiere end to end.

Practical planning

Venice has no cars: arrive by train at Santa Lucia or by bus and footbridge at Piazzale Roma, and buy vaporetto passes rather than single tickets. Accommodation is densest near the station and Rialto; prices swing sharply with season and Carnival. Access taxes and day-tripper rules have been evolving, so check the municipality’s current arrangements before travelling. Comfortable waterproof shoes beat fashion; high water (acqua alta) is seasonal and signposted, not catastrophic.
