Venice Lagoon

0 private tours·12 attractions

The Venice Lagoon is a wide, shallow sea-grass lagoon holding the city of Venice and a scattered archipelago of islands where history, nature and quiet coexist: quarantine islands, a Franciscan retreat, vineyards behind ancient walls, monumental sea defences and the market gardens that once fed the Republic. It is Venice as the Venetians knew it — water, work and silence.

Why visit

Beyond the celebrated trio of Murano, Burano and Torcello lies a larger lagoon that few visitors enter. Here you can walk the top of eighteenth-century stone sea walls with the sea on one side and the lagoon on the other, land on an island of archaeological excavations open only by guided tour, taste a white wine grown inside a single walled vineyard, and cross to a Franciscan island where friars have kept silence since the thirteenth century. The lagoon area suits travellers who want Venice’s setting rather than only its monuments: salt marsh and birdlife, island churches, and the slow ferries that stitch it all together.

Character and history

The lagoon made Venice possible: its mudflats and channels sheltered refugees, hid fleets and fed a city with fish, salt and garden produce. Defence of that fragile edge became a permanent duty of the Republic. Its grandest answer still stands at Pellestrina, where the Murazzi sea walls — designed and built over nearly the whole eighteenth century in white Istrian stone — were raised against the Adriatic across three long stretches; battered by storms and famously breached in the catastrophic flood of November 1966, they have since been reinforced with perpendicular rock breakwaters that build the beaches back. Faith, medicine and agriculture all left their marks on the islands: quarantine stations guarded the city from plague, monasteries cleared and prayed, and market gardens supplied the tables of the Serenissima.

What to see

In the northern lagoon, the Lazzaretto Nuovo Island preserves its quarantine great hall, graffiti of past occupants and open archaeological digs, with a marshland nature trail around the island; its companion, the older Lazzaretto Vecchio, lies near the Lido and points toward a future as a lagoon archaeology museum. On Mazzorbo, the walled vineyard of Venissa keeps the one hectare of Dorona di Venezia left in the world — grapes rediscovered after the 1966 flood had all but ended lagoon viticulture — and the surviving church of Saints Peter and Catherine still serves its parish. Nearby, the Franciscan island of San Francesco del Deserto keeps cloister and gardens of monastic stillness. To the south, walk the Murazzi between the cemetery of Pellestrina and Ca’ Roman, visit the island’s baroque Sanctuary of the Madonna dell’Apparizione, and stop at the community-run Little Museum of the Southern Lagoon. Close to the city itself lie the Armenian monastery of San Lazzaro, the monumental cemetery island of San Michele, the asylum-history museum on San Servolo, and the market gardens and shoreline of Sant’Erasmo, the Republic’s orchard island.

How to experience

Travel by public ferry and plan generously: islands keep ferry timetables rather than tourist hours, and several accept visits only by reservation or guided tour. A slow day pairs the Lazzaretto Nuovo tour with a Sant’Erasmo walk and an artichoke-season lunch; another links Burano with Mazzorbo’s vineyard and, with notice, San Francesco del Deserto. The Pellestrina murazzi are best walked or cycled end to end, with the Lido bus as a bail-out. Spring and autumn give the best light and birdlife; summer brings heat, mosquitoes and the fullest boats.

Practical planning

The lagoon is served by ACTV ferry lines from Fondamente Nove, San Zaccaria and the Lido; buy day passes and check return times, since some routes run infrequently, especially on weekends. Guided-visit islands require online booking, and a few close for private events. There is little shade and little shelter on most islands — carry water, sun protection and wind layers. Respect the tranquillity of the monastery island and the cemetery, and remember that swimming is not part of the lagoon experience.

Nearby places

Venice is the gateway and the counterpoint; Murano, Burano, Torcello and Lido are the better-known islands this area surrounds.
