Vasto crowns its crescent of golden sand — the Golfo d’Oro — with a Renaissance palazzo, a hilltop castle and Roman baths beneath the old streets. An ancient mariner town once called Histonium, it balances museums and medieval lanes with one of the loveliest seaside settings in Abruzzo.

Why visit

Perched above the mezzaluna bay that the locals call the Gulf of Gold, Vasto is the rare Adriatic town where a serious museum complex, a medieval castle and a Roman baths site sit minutes from beaches. The regional tourism portal ranks it among the most characteristic places in Abruzzo, and the old centre justifies the claim: noble loggias looking over the sea, a cathedral keeping a relic of the Holy Thorn, and gardens suspended above the gulf. It sits at the southern end of the trabocchi coastline near the Molise border, close to the wild promontory of Punta Aderci, so a stay here combines city art with unspoilt coast.

Character and history

Known to the Romans as Histonium, Vasto grew from small Adriatic coastal villages into an important mariner town. Destroyed in the early ninth century and rebuilt as the twin settlements of Guasto d’Aymone and Guasto Gisone, it was reunited only in the fourteenth century — the Lombard-era word “Guasto” itself eventually softening into today’s name. Successive dominations left their traces in the palaces and churches of the upper town. The d’Avalos family, its most celebrated lords, raised the Renaissance palace that now houses the civic museums, while the poet Gabriele Rossetti, born here and exiled to England, is honoured with a statue on the square that bears his name — the “salon” of the city.

The Palazzo d’Avalos is the heart of any visit: its museum centre gathers the Archaeological Museum, founded in the mid-nineteenth century, the Museum of Abruzzese Costume, the Picture Gallery with its important section devoted to the Palizzi brothers, and the Contemporary Art Gallery. From the Napoletani Gardens behind the palace, the terrace opens onto a panorama over the gulf that the municipal guide calls without equal.

The historic circuit continues with the 15th-century Caldoresco Castle, built onto Roman walls, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore on Piazza Rossetti, where a Holy Thorn said to come from Christ’s crown is preserved; the Co-Cathedral of San Giuseppe holds a precious sixteenth-century painting by Michele Greco da Valona. Along Via Adriatica you meet the ancient portal of the Church of San Pietro and the Roman Baths, imperial-era remains with a splendid Neptune mosaic and other marine scenes. The walk ends on the belvedere: the Loggia Amblingh and, down on the rocks, the sinuous Monument to the Bather. Nature closes the itinerary at the Punta Aderci Nature Reserve, the protected headland at the northern edge of town.

Take the classic route: castle, piazza, palazzo and gardens in the morning, then the Loggia Amblingh walkway as the sea turns silver.
