Tremezzo
Tremezzo is the grandest face of Lake Como’s western shore: a village of villas, camellias and lakeside hotels gathered beneath wooded hills, now a frazione of Tremezzina. Its promenade, its botanical gardens and its cluster of little oratories make it one of the lake’s most complete destinations.
Why visit
Tremezzo holds the rare double distinction of scenery and substance. It is the only village in the Province of Como admitted to the club of Italy’s most beautiful borghi, and the evidence is immediate: a palm-lined promenade facing Bellagio across the water, gardens glowing with seasonal bloom, and hillsides where lemons once ripened in profusion — an old local title calls it the village where lemons flower. The presence of Villa Carlotta alone would justify the trip, but the village rewards slower attention: an octagonal parish church beside the road, hillside hamlets untouched by the lakeside glamour, and oratories that catch the evening light. It also works beautifully as a base, since ferries cross frequently to the mid-lake villages and the Greenway walking route threads straight through. Visitors who skip Tremezzo for the headline names on the other shores tend to remember it longest once they have seen it.
Character and history
The settlement is older than its postcards. Cup marks and early Christian tombs found in the upper hamlets of Volesio and Intignano point to remote origins, and in the Middle Ages Tremezzo’s fortunes were tied to Isola Comacina’s defensive system — it suffered in the ten-year war between Como and Milan, when Comaschi forces burned much of the shore. Under the State of Milan the village settled into farming and fishing, until the eighteenth century brought the fashion for lake villas that transformed the shoreline. Marquises and milanese families built the estates whose gardens still step down to the water, and the railway age of tourism brought Verdi, Queen Victoria and other illustrious guests to the grand hotels. In the 1920s the architect Pietro Lingeri, born at nearby Rogaro, added sharp rationalist villas to the shore. Since 2014 Tremezzo has formed part of the municipality of Tremezzina, yet it keeps the self-possession of a place long accustomed to admiration.
What to see
Villa Carlotta is the essential stop: built at the end of the seventeenth century by the Clerici marquises of Milan, later home to Princess Charlotte of Saxe-Meiningen who gave it her name, it pairs a museum of masterpieces by Canova, Hayez and Thorvaldsen with a celebrated botanical garden where blooms succeed one another through every season.
Beside the main road, the Church of San Lorenzo surprises with its central octagonal plan, roofed in Marseille tiles and decorated by Luigi Tagliaferri; its bell tower rises from Moltrasio stone blocks. The hills above hold three small treasures of popular devotion: the Oratory of San Pietro, the Oratory of the Madonna di Einsiedeln and the Oratory of San Bartolomeo.
Down at the water, the Teresio Olivelli Civic Park and the Tremezzo Lakeside Promenade form one continuous stage between plane trees and lake — the finest free spectacle on the western shore.
How to experience
Arrive by boat if you can: the approach from the water, with the facade of villas and the mountains behind, is the correct overture. Walk the promenade end to end at golden hour, then climb into the hillside hamlets of Rogaro, Volesio or Intignano, where cobbled lanes and chickens replace hotels. Follow the Greenway del Lago di Como through the village toward Griante or Mezzegra for views that reframe the shore. Give Villa Carlotta a full morning — garden first, interiors after — and reserve tickets online in high season. A ferry hop to Bellagio or Varenna for lunch makes the day symmetrical; returning across the water at dusk, with Tremezzo’s lights coming on above the landing, is the moment the lake explains itself.
Practical planning
Tremezzo sits on the western shore about midway along the lake, served by the lakeside road (Strada Statale Regina) and by regular ferries and buses from Como and Menaggio. Cars are best left parked; the village is compact and walkable, though the hillside hamlets involve steep lanes. Villa Carlotta and the civic museums keep seasonal hours and occasional closures — confirm on villacarlotta.it and the Tremezzina municipal site before travelling. Spring brings the great garden flowering; September offers warm water and quieter landings. Book lakeside restaurants for weekend dinners, and remember that church interiors observe a respectful dress code. Strollers and wheelchairs manage the promenade easily; the upper hamlets do not.
Nearby places
North along the shore lie Griante and Menaggio; south, Lenno with the peninsula of Villa del Balbianello and Ossuccio beneath its sacred mountain. The parent municipality is described at Tremezzina, and the wider lake at Lake Como.
