Sperlonga

Sperlonga perches on a rocky headland between Rome and Naples, a whitewashed borgo of alleys, arches and sea-scented piazzas wrapped around sandy coves. Below it, an imperial grotto once furnished by the emperor Tiberius now anchors a museum of extraordinary classical sculpture, giving this stretch of coast its name: the Riviera di Ulisse.

Why visit

Sperlonga manages a double act that few seaside towns can match. Above the beaches lies one of the southern Lazio coast’s best-preserved medieval centres, its stacked white houses and arched vicoli made for slow evening wandering. Below, on the promontory, the Villa of Tiberius and its great sea-facing grotto hold one of the most important sculptural ensembles of the ancient world, recovered piece by piece from the water and displayed in the national museum beside it. Add watchtowers on the rocks, a marine protected area off the cape, and beaches within a short walk of the old town, and the town makes an easy base for a week or a compelling day trip from either metropolis.

Character and history

The village grew on the headland after the coastal plain became marshy and dangerous, and its earliest recorded landmark is the church of Santa Maria, noted in a document of 1135 as an important place of worship. Its towers belong to the sixteenth century: Torre Truglia rose in 1532 on the base of an older Roman watch post, was destroyed by Barbarossa within two years, rebuilt in 1611, raided again in 1623, and eventually settled into its role as a reliable lookout. It now houses a marine-environment education centre of the Riviera d’Ulisse park.

The ancient story is even older. A maritime villa built in the first century BC, probably inherited by Tiberius through his mother’s family, was completely renovated under the emperor, who made the great natural grotto a stage for sculpture. When roadworks cut the cliff in 1957, thousands of marble fragments emerged from the flooded grotto — works tied to the legends of Ulysses and attributed to the Rhodian sculptors associated with the Laocoön. The museum that grew from that discovery opened in 1963.

What to see

The National Archaeological Museum of Sperlonga displays the four great groups — the Scylla, the Blinding of Polyphemus with its iconic head of Ulysses, the theft of the Palladium and the Pasquino Group — while the adjoining Villa of Tiberius – Archaeological Area and Grotto of Tiberius spreads along the shore beneath the headland. On the rocks at the harbour mouth stands Torre Truglia. In the borgo, the Church of Santa Maria preserves its early twelfth-century naves and the Church of San Rocco dates from the fifteenth century, and the Oasi Blu Marine Area of Sperlonga protects the waters off the villa.

How to experience

Split your day between water and stone: morning at the museum and villa before the heat, an early afternoon on the beach or a boat trip along the caves, and the evening in the borgo’s alleys as the town turns out for passeggiata. A footpath links the centre with the archaeological area in roughly fifteen minutes. The local tourism consortium runs guided walking tours of the old town in Italian and English, and its site lists the summer events calendar. Practical planning

Sperlonga is reached from Rome by the Via Pontina or, more simply, by train to Fondi-Sperlonga with a connecting bus; the Via Flacca coast road links it with Terracina and Gaeta. Summer parking near the centre and villa is limited and largely paid, so arrive early or go on foot. Beaches just below the borgo include a reservation-served public beach and free stretches towards the port. Hours at the archaeological area are seasonal and closed Mondays apply to state sites; verify current arrangements on the official museum site.

Nearby places

Along the coast, Terracina rises under its temple-topped mountain and Gaeta fills the gulf beyond, while inland the hilltown of Sermoneta guards its castle and the gardens of Ninfa. Latina and Cisterna di Latina serve as transport and market hubs for the plain.
