Perched on a rocky spur above a heart-shaped lake, Scanno is an Abruzzese mountain town where medieval lanes, aristocratic palaces and a celebrated women’s costume meet some of the most photographed scenery in the central Apennines, all framed by the Gole del Sagittario reserve.

Why visit

The road in is the first spectacle: hairpins climbing through the Gole del Sagittario regional reserve, then the sudden reveal of a natural lake with a distinctive heart-shaped outline, and above it a town clinging to a spur of Monte Carapale. Scanno entered the twentieth century through the lenses of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Hilde Lotz-Bauer and Mario Giacomelli, drawn by its pale stone houses, its older women in traditional black dress, and alleys that seem lifted from an archive photograph. It holds a place among the Borghi più Belli d’Italia, and the lake below carries a Blue Flag for water quality. Few mountain towns pair craft heritage, faith architecture and lake leisure this completely.

Character and history

A settlement likely existed here in Roman times, and over the centuries the town passed through the hands of the great southern families — the Counts of Valva and later Sangro, the d’Aquino, d’Avalos, De Pascale, D’Afflitto and finally the Caracciolo. Prosperity came from pastoralism and, between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, from dyeing and weaving: the skill of Scanno’s women at the loom was known throughout the Kingdom of Naples, and the traditional women’s costume they wore remains a source of pride, still worn on feast days and now the subject of a UNESCO candidacy effort. Goldsmithing and bobbin lace survive in small workshops. The same devotion that filled its churches gave the town its dozens of votive images and frescoes, including the enthroned Madonna of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli.

What to see

The historic centre rewards slow wandering: houses built so close they seem to embrace, stepped lanes, fountains and noble portals. Start at the Fontana Sarracco, a two-arched fountain raised in stages, near the Former Church of the Purgatory, built at the end of the seventeenth century and now used as an auditorium. Among the palaces, Palazzo Mosca and Palazzo Di Rienzo — formed from the fused feudal residences of the D’Afflitto and Caracciolo — speak of the town’s wealthy past.

Churches structure the visit: Sant’Eustachio and Santa Maria di Loreto, recorded as early as a document of 1188, the sixteenth-century Church of San Giovanni Battista, San Rocco, Sant’Antonio Abate, Santa Maria delle Grazie built by the Scolopi fathers, and the frescoed Santa Maria di Costantinopoli. The Nocella Arch and the Gate of the Cross, the last survivor of the demolished walls, mark the medieval entrances. The Museum of Wool explains the weaving trade that made the town famous. Below, Lake Scanno — Abruzzo’s largest natural lake, formed when a landslide from Monte Genzana dammed the Tasso river — draws the eye from the Heart Trail viewpoint, while the little Lake Madonna Shrine sits on the shore path.

How to experience

Give the centre a full morning on foot, then descend to the lake for the afternoon: pedal boats, rowing boats and canoes are available in season, and paddling to the south-western shore gives you the little lakeside church from the water. The Heart Trail signs lead to the famous viewpoint over the heart-shaped perimeter — go in the morning for the clearest light. Look for gold filigree and tombolo lace in the workshops, and eat the mountain kitchen: white polenta with beans and greens in winter, the Easter zuppettone of kid broth, egg and pecorino, and the mostacciolo sweets. Check abruzzoturismo.it for the current lake services and trail conditions before setting out.

Practical planning

Scanno lies about an hour’s drive from Sulmona through the Sagittario gorges; the road is narrow but superbly scenic, and winter driving can require care. The village is entirely pedestrian and steep, so travel light and wear good shoes. Accommodation ranges from family hotels to mountain guesthouses, busiest in August and around Easter. Parking sits below the historic centre. Church opening times are irregular — the municipal reference comune.scanno.aq.it and the regional tourism portal list contacts for up-to-date information.

Nearby places

The obvious pairings are Sulmona below the gorges, Pescocostanzo on the Alta Sangro plateau, and the national-park villages of Barrea and Villetta Barrea on the lake road towards the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
