A working port with a regal past, Savona hides its treasures in plain sight: a papal chapel and the apartments where Napoleon held a pope prisoner, a Genoese fortress raised over the demolished medieval city, and a compact old town between harbour and hills. Why visit

Savona rewards the traveller who looks beneath the surface. Seen from the ferry terminal it appears purely industrial, but a short walk away stand the concentric walls of the Priamar fortress, a cathedral complex that holds a Sistine Chapel built by a native son who became pope, and a waterfront tower that has watched the port since the fourteenth century. The museums of the MUSA network — archaeology, ceramics, modern art, the memorabilia of President Sandro Pertini — give the city cultural depth unusual for its size. Add a walkable historic centre, the old harbour basin where fishing boats still moor, and a position within twenty minutes of some of Liguria’s finest coastal villages, and Savona works both as a destination in itself and as a base.

Character and history

Savona’s story is written in stone and grievance. A Ligurian settlement that came under Roman influence, it grew into a maritime commune — its declaration of liberties was signed at the Brandale tower in 1191 — and became Genoa’s stubborn rival on this stretch of coast. That rivalry ended badly: in 1528 Andrea Doria’s Genoa took the city definitively, destroyed the upper town and filled in the harbour, then raised the fortress of the Priamar from 1542 on the very site of the old cathedral and medieval core. Yet Savona gave the church two Renaissance popes of the Della Rovere family, Sixtus IV and Julius II, and in 1809 it received Pope Pius VII as Napoleon’s prisoner, held in the episcopal apartments for several years. The nineteenth century brought railways, shipyards and the navigator Leon Pancaldo’s memory — the fifteenth-century tower at the harbour mouth bears his name — while the ceramics tradition of nearby Albisola gave the city its museums of fired clay. Sandro Pertini, president of the Italian Republic, was a son of this province.

The Priamar Fortress dominates everything: Genoese-built from 1542, later a military prison that held Giuseppe Mazzini in 1830–31, whose cell is preserved as the Giuseppe Mazzini’s Prison Cell. Within its walls, the Civic Archaeological and City Museum displays pre-Roman, Roman and Byzantine finds from the promontory, and the Sandro Pertini and Renata Cuneo Museum honours the president alongside the sculptor’s work. Down by the water, the Leon Pancaldo Tower marks the harbour entrance and the Brandale Complex (Campanassa Tower) recalls the medieval commune. The cathedral quarter holds the sixteenth-century Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, consecrated in 1605, with the Della Rovere Sistine Chapel of Savona beside it, the Cathedral Treasury Museum, and nearby the Apartments of Pope Pius VII, open by guided visit. Art and craft continue at the Civic Art Gallery in Palazzo Gavotti and the Ceramics Museum, while the Historic Centre and Darsena ties it all together between fortress and sea.

Begin at the Priamar in the morning, when the ramparts are quiet and the view stretches from the Apuan Alps to the port cranes; underground tours run at set times, so check the schedule. Walk down through the old quarter for lunch — Savona’s tables lean on anchovies, focaccia and the vegetables of the Ligurian kitchen — then take the cathedral complex in the afternoon, ideally on one of the guided openings that include the Pius VII apartments. End the day along the Darsena, where the pace slows to an evening passeggiata. On Mondays, when some museums close, the coastal villages to the west make a natural alternative.
