Sarzana

Where the Magra valley opens towards the sea and Liguria shading into Tuscany, Sarzana gathers eight centuries of shifting rule into a compact, elegant town: two Medici-era fortresses, a cathedral guarding one of Italy’s oldest painted crucifixes, and a historic centre that still trades in antiques and ideas rather than souvenirs.

Why visit

Sarzana rewards travellers who like their Italian towns layered. Within a few hundred metres of the centre stand two fortresses built by rival powers, a Romanesque cathedral whose painted crucifix of 1138 is counted among the earliest and most important in Italy, and a maze of churches, oratories and palaces that record the town’s passage from the bishops of Luni to Pisa, Florence and Genoa. It is also a living cultural town — self-styled a city of culture — with a theatre run by a regional production centre, a diocesan museum of sacred art, and a reputation for festivals of philosophy, writing and antiques. For visitors based on the Cinque Terre or the Gulf of Poets, it makes an easy and rewarding inland day, especially in the cooler hours when the stones of the citadel glow at their best.

Character and history

First recorded in 983 in a diploma of Emperor Otto I, Sarzana rose as the port and administrative seat of the diocese of Luni; when the ancient city of Luni declined, the episcopal see moved here in 1202, bringing prestige and building programmes with it. Position at the mouth of the Magra made the town a prize: it belonged in succession to Pisa, then Florence, then the Banco di San Giorgio of Genoa, and from 1572 to the Republic of Genoa itself. Florence left the deeper mark — the citadel known as Firmafede took its present shape under Lorenzo the Magnificent, and work on the hill fortress of Sarzanello began in 1493 before Genoa completed it in 1502. The town has unexpected genealogical and religious fame: the Buonaparte family took its name from holdings near Sarzana before a branch moved to Corsica in 1512, and Tommaso Parentucelli, the future Pope Nicholas V, was born here in 1397.

What to see

Begin at the Firmafede Fortress (Cittadella), built between 1487 and 1492 on Pisan foundations and now restored as a cultural venue with exhibitions; inside, the MUdeF — Museum of Fortresses explores military architecture across twenty-seven rooms (check its current status before visiting, as sections close periodically for maintenance). On the hill above, the Fortress of Sarzanello commands the whole Val di Magra and is open to visitors. In the centre, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta keeps the painted crucifix signed and dated 1138 by Maestro Guglielmo, a touchstone of Italian Romanesque painting, alongside a relic venerated in the chapel by the main altar; the adjacent Diocesan Museum of Sarzana displays further sacred art. The Pieve of St Andrew, the town’s oldest sacred building with roots in the tenth century, carries a Carrara-marble portal carved with the eight-pointed star of the city’s elders. Round out the circuit with the baroque Church of St Catherine, the Franciscan complex of the Church of St Francis, the confraternity Oratory of the Misericordia on the fortress square, and the neoclassical Teatro degli Impavidi, rebuilt by public subscription after war damage. Life in the centre gathers around Piazza Matteotti, the cafés and arcades of which make the natural pause point.

How to experience

Sarzana is best taken on foot, in a loop from the citadel through the centre to the cathedral and out to the pieve. Take the climb to Sarzanello late in the afternoon, when the view over the Magra valley towards the Apuan Alps is clearest. If your dates coincide with one of the town’s cultural festivals or the long-established antiques market weekends, plan around them — they bring the historic centre alive. Practical planning

Sarzana has its own railway station on the Genoa–Pisa line, with La Spezia about fifteen minutes away and Carrara just over the regional border; the A12 motorway serves the town. The centre is flat and easily walkable; Sarzanello requires a short drive or a steep walk. Accommodation is quieter and often better value than on the coast. Confirm fortress, museum and oratory opening times seasonally, and allow a full day to see the fortifications and the churches without rushing.

Nearby places
