Rovigo

Rovigo is the quiet capital of the Polesine, the lowland province wedged between the Po and the Adige rivers in southern Veneto. Often crossed rather than visited, it rewards the traveller who stops: an octagonal Renaissance votive temple, a skeletal medieval tower, refined patrician palaces and a museum devoted to living beside great rivers, all within a compact historic centre.

Why visit

Rovigo suits travellers who like their Italian cities unhurried and their art without queues. The city’s symbol, the Tempio della Rotonda, is an octagonal votive church of extraordinary interior richness; the medieval towers by the Piazza Matteotti speak of a frontier fortress; and a dense cluster of squares, loggias and palaces records three centuries under the Republic of Venice. Add an ambitious exhibition calendar at Palazzo Roverella, one of provincial Italy’s most successful art venues, and a museum unlike any other on the theme of rivers, and the stopover becomes a destination in its own right.

Character and history

Rovigo grew from a castle. In 920, facing Hungarian raids, the Bishop of Adria obtained permission to build a fortress on an embankment beside a former bed of the Adige; the settlement that gathered around it took its name from the rose (“rodon”) of local heraldry. The castle’s walls once counted eight towers and a moat with drawbridges; of that ring survive the great Torre Donà, roughly sixty metres high and counted among Italy’s major early-medieval towers, and the truncuated Torre Mozza.

Governance followed the logic of the borderlands: the city belonged to the Este of Ferrara until 1482, when it passed to Venice and remained under the Serenissima until 1797. Venetian rule left the merchant squares, the porticoed loggias and the patrician palaces — Palazzo Roncale, Palazzo Pretorio, the Ferrarese-gothic Palazzo Silvestri — that still frame daily life. Intellectual life found its home in the Accademia dei Concordi, a learned society whose library and picture gallery anchor the main square. The votive temple that became the city’s emblem was begun in 1594 to a design by Francesco Zamberlan, a collaborator of Palladio, in thanksgiving for deliverance from plague.

What to see

Begin on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the civic stage framed by the Loggia dei Nodari, the Civic Tower and Palazzo Roncale, then step into the Tempio della Rotonda: inside, seventeenth-century Venetian canvases by Francesco Maffei and Antonio Zanchi cover the walls, a Callido organ of 1767 stands in the choir, and a slender bell tower is attributed to Longhena. Walk north to the castle remains and the towers, then across the medieval gates of Porta San Bartolomeo and Porta Sant’Agostino. Art lovers should not miss the pinacoteca at Palazzo Roverella, with paintings from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century and a celebrated programme of temporary exhibitions; its sister venue, Palazzo Roncale, hosts shows nearby. In the Olivetan complex of San Bartolomeo, the Museum of the Great Rivers narrates millennia of life between the Po and the Adige through original artefacts, models and multimedia. Connoisseurs of quieter places will enjoy the little Oratory of the Santissima Concezione and the cloistered Church of San Bartolomeo.

How to experience

Rovigo is a city on foot: the whole circuit of towers, squares and churches fits comfortably into a day, ideally punctuated by coffee on Piazzetta Annonaria and an evening passeggiata along Corso del Popolo. Time a visit to a Palazzo Roverella exhibition — the autumn photography season and major painting shows draw visitors from across the northeast. A combined ticket covers the principal civic sites, and the river museum pairs naturally with an excursion toward the Po Delta. Listen for the local dialect and the river flatness of the horizon: the Polesine is experienced as much through landscape as through monuments.

Practical planning

Rovigo sits on the Venice–Bologna railway line, with frequent regional trains from Padua (about half an hour) and Ferrara. The historic centre is flat and bicycle-friendly. Museums generally close on Mondays and observe reduced winter schedules, so check current opening arrangements before travelling. Accommodation is modest but central; many visitors base themselves in Padua or Ferrara and come for the day.
