Roero

Roero is the hill country on the left bank of the Tanaro, the often-overlooked twin of the Langhe across the river. Steep ridges of sandy soil carry Arneis and Nebbiolo vineyards within a UNESCO-listed landscape, while a thirty-kilometre band of erosion cliffs — the Rocche — slices through woods between hilltop villages, castles and more than a hundred kilometres of walking trails.

Why visit

Travellers who know the Langhe sometimes cross the Tanaro expecting more of the same and find something else entirely. Roero’s sandy terrain gives the wines a leaner, more aromatic profile — above all the white Roero Arneis, a grape native to these hills — and the landscape is a patchwork of woods, orchards and vineyard slopes rather than unbroken rows. The signature sight is geological: the Rocche, compact-sand gullies carved along the fault where the Roero plateau drops toward the plain, threading some thirty kilometres through forest. An ecomuseum based in Montà interprets this territory through guided walks, truffle hunting and castle openings, and the trail network makes the area as rewarding for hikers and cyclists as for wine drinkers.

Character and history

Roero’s hilltop villages took shape after the year 1000 along the line of the Rocche, and the noble family that gave the region its name, the Roero, dominated its castles for centuries. The land remembers both sustenance and movement: beekeeping and truffle grounds in the woods, peaches and vegetables on the plain’s edge, vines on the well-drained slopes. The sandy “sabbie d’Asti” soils warm quickly and drain freely, shaping wines distinct from the Langhe’s heavier marls. In 2014 the vineyard landscape of Langhe, Roero and Monferrato entered the UNESCO World Heritage list, and the Roero docg consortium — representing a few hundred growers and roughly a thousand hectares — now carries the region’s name to export markets worldwide. The ecomuseum movement has given this identity an institutional home, protecting paths, chapels, and the everyday rural heritage that grander wine regions sometimes overlook.

Begin at the Ecomuseum of the Rocche del Roero in Montà, where maps, audioguides and staff advice turn the territory into a readable museum. Its greatest exhibits are outdoors: the Rocche of Roero themselves, dramatic sand formations winding through the woods, and the Great Trail of Roero, the long-distance path running from Bra to Cisterna d’Asti across a network of more than a hundred marked kilometres. In Montà itself, the Sanctuary of the Piloni chains chapels of the Way of the Cross up the hillside, and the Civic Tower of Montà offers a panoramic balcony over the hills. The castles deserve a day of their own: the medieval Roero Castle of Monticello d’Alba with its historic park, the baroque Castle of Guarene, and the Castle of Magliano Alfieri holding museums devoted to the landscape and to the region’s curious plaster vaults. Further east stand the Castle of Cisterna d’Asti with its ethnographic collection, the Royal Castle of Govone with its Chinese rooms and rose garden, and the park castles of Sanfrè and Ceresole d’Alba.

Roero rewards planning around the seasons and the landscape. Walk a stretch of the Rocche in spring or autumn, when the woodland microclimates — dry ridges beside humid gullies — are at their most atmospheric, and download the ecomuseum’s GPS tracks before setting out, checking which paths are open. Book a guided trek or a truffle hunt with a trifolao through the ecomuseum, or simply taste your way across the region: Roero Arneis for the whites, Roero for the Nebbiolo reds, poured at wineries across Monteu Roero, Canale, Monticello d’Alba and beyond, most happily with an appointment. Castle openings vary — several welcome visitors only on weekends or monthly by reservation — so assemble your itinerary around the ecomuseum’s calendar and the events like Notturni nelle Rocche that light up the summer evenings.

Practical planning

Roero sits between Alba and Bra in the Province of Cuneo, about an hour from Turin by road; there is no rail line through the hills, so a car is the practical choice, with Bra and Alba as the nearest hubs. The region suits slow touring: distances are short, but roads are ridge-top and winding. Base yourself in one of the hill towns — Montà, Canale or Guarene all work — and radiate outward. Services are village-scale, so stock up and book restaurants ahead in low season.
