Rapallo

Rapallo gathers the Ligurian coast’s practical and scenic virtues in one sheltered bay: a sixteenth-century castle standing in the water, a cable car riding to a ridge-top sanctuary, a web of old-quarter lanes, and a promenade once frequented by Nietzsche, Pound and Kandinsky. It remains the eastern Riviera’s most convenient base.

Choose Rapallo when you want the Riviera di Levante’s full toolkit in one place. The bay curves between headlands with a working marina, lidos and one of the region’s most agreeable seafront walks; behind it lies an old quarter of cobbled lanes and painted facades; above it all, a cable car climbs to the sanctuary of Montallegro for the best high view between Genoa and the Cinque Terre. Unlike its smaller neighbours, Rapallo works in any season: it was a fashionable winter resort for wealthy northerners long before summer tourism arrived, and its museums, concert season and literary associations give it depth when the beach is not the point. It is also superbly connected — railway, boats to Portofino and Camogli, road access to the hill sanctuaries — which makes it the strategist’s base for the eastern Riviera.

Character and history

The town’s name appears in a document of 964, and it passed under Genoese control in 1229. The sixteenth century left the deepest mark: after corsair raids devastated the coast, the Genoese built the Castello sul Mare on the rocks of the bay — begun in 1551 — and connected it to shore by a bridge; it is now the town’s emblem and an exhibition venue. Higher up, tradition places an apparition of the Virgin on Monte Allegro in July 1557, and the sanctuary that commemorates it became the spiritual capital of the whole Tigullio, celebrated each summer with fireworks. Rapallo entered the modern age early — the railway arrived in 1868 — and reinvented itself as a winter resort, drawing a remarkable roll-call of writers and artists: Nietzsche wrote here, Ezra Pound lived in the town for decades, Kandinsky painted here, and the 1920 Treaty of Rapallo gave the name a place in diplomatic history. The town’s craft traditions run equally deep; its bobbin-lace making was celebrated enough to earn a museum of its own.

What to see

Begin on the water at the Castle on the Sea, the sixteenth-century fortress on its islet, then walk the Vittorio Veneto Seafront and Music Kiosk, the palm-lined promenade with its painted early twentieth-century bandstand. Into the old quarter: the Basilica of Saints Gervase and Protase, the town’s mother church with its twin bell towers and bronze doors; the Civic Tower of 1473, the oldest monument in the historic centre; the surviving Salt Gate of the medieval walls; and the confraternity oratories, the Church of St Stephen (Oratory of the Blacks) and the Oratory of the Whites, whose processions still mark Holy Week. The little stone Hannibal Bridge crosses its stream in the middle of town, and the Church of St Francis preserves a conventual interior. Ride the Rapallo-Montallegro Cableway up to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montallegro for the classic panorama. Museum-goers should seek the Lace Museum in Villa Tigullio and the rural San Maurizio Mill Complex and Peasant Museum in the hills; walkers can head for the Gothic ruins of the Valle Christi Abbey or the Church of St Michael the Archangel at San Michele di Pagana, which keeps a painting attributed to Van Dyck.

How to experience

Adopt Rapallo’s own rhythm: passeggiata before dinner on the seafront, market day in the middle of the week, an early ride up the cable car before the queues. The Montallegro ascent is the signature experience — ride up and, if your knees agree, walk down the old mule path through the woods. Swim at the lidos along the bay or from the rocks near San Michele di Pagana. Use the boat pier: ferries and taxi-boats to Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure turn a logistics problem into a scenic cruise, and summer services reach the Cinque Terre. For culture, time a visit to the castle’s exhibitions or the town’s concert season, both programmed by the municipality.

Practical planning

Rapallo station sits on the main Genoa-Pisa coastal line, with frequent trains east to the Cinque Terre gateway towns and west towards Genoa; buses cover the Portofino peninsula, and parking, while better than in Portofino, is still paid and busy in August. Shoulder seasons — May-June and September-October — offer the best mix of sea and sightseeing.

Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure lie immediately west by bus or boat, with the Portofino peninsula park trails between them; Camogli continues along the coast, and Sestri Levante makes an easy excursion eastwards.
