Racconigi

Racconigi is a town in the Cuneo plain whose identity is bound to one extraordinary ensemble: the Royal Castle of the Savoy-Carignano line, its 170 hectares of parkland, and the storks that nest in its grounds. Around a castle that witnessed four centuries of royal history, the town adds silk-mill heritage, a civic art gallery and quiet baroque churches.

The park may be the greater pleasure: lakes and canals shaded by monumental trees, a Russian dacha built for a tsar’s visit, and free-flying white storks that have made the estate their address. Character and history

A manor stood here by the year 1000, passing through Cistercian hands and the margraves of Saluzzo before the House of Savoy acquired it in the sixteenth century. In 1630, Duke Charles Emmanuel I granted the moated brick fortress to Thomas Francis, Prince of Carignano, founder of the Savoy-Carignano line, and the castle became that branch’s principal seat. The late seventeenth century brought Guarino Guarini, who transformed the fortress into a pleasure residence with domed pavilions replacing the northern towers; later generations added neoclassical interiors and a grand staircase, and Carlo Alberto, before he became king, expanded the complex through his architect Ernesto Melano. The twentieth century made history here twice over: Umberto II, the last King of Italy, was born in the castle in 1904, and in 1909 Tsar Nicholas I’s namesake visit — meeting Vittorio Emanuele III — produced the so-called Racconigi Bargain and, in the park, the dacha that still stands by the water. The castle entered the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997 with the other Residences of the Royal House of Savoy.
