Pavia

Half an hour south of Milan, where the Ticino meets the Po, Pavia preserves the dignity of a capital that once ruled a Lombard kingdom. Romanesque basilicas, a Carthusian marvel in the fields, one of Europe’s oldest universities and a riverside bridge that closes every postcard: it is a compact city of serious art, quietly confident and crowd-free.

Why visit

Pavia offers the density of an art city without the queues of one. Within a short walk you can move from paleochristian crypts to Renaissance tombs, from a university courtyard where Volta’s instruments are kept to a covered bridge spanning the Ticino at sunset. The Certosa di Pavia alone would justify the trip — an extravagantly carved monastery on the plain to the north — but the city matches it with monasteries, towers and museums housed in a ducal castle. Students keep the centre lively and affordable, and the cooking is Lombard comfort food at its best: risotto, frog legs, salame d’oca and the sweet torta delizia parecelì.

Character and history

Pavia’s golden age came under the Lombards, who made it their capital after the fall of the Roman empire; it stayed the seat of their kings until Charlemagne took the city in 774, and the basilica of San Michele later hosted the coronations of both Lombard and imperial rulers, Frederick Barbarossa among them. Monastic foundations followed one another so thickly that chroniclers called Pavia a city of a hundred towers. The Visconti dukes of Milan built their vast castle here in the fourteenth century, and the dynasty’s piety and vanity meet just outside town at the Certosa, begun in the late fourteenth century at the behest of Gian Galeazzo Visconti and carried on across the fifteenth into a synthesis of Gothic and Lombard Renaissance. The university, an ateneo storico founded in the fourteenth century under Visconti patronage, later taught Volta and Golgi and still shapes the town’s rhythm; its museums preserve scientific instruments, natural history and the anatomy collections that made Pavia famous in medicine.

What to see

Two of the assigned sights are alone worth the journey. The Certosa di Pavia (Charterhouse of Pavia) greets you first with its marble facade, then with cloisters and monks’ courtyards of extraordinary refinement; the adjacent Certosa di Pavia Museum, a state institution inside the former ducal residence, displays plaster casts, paintings by Luini and Bergognone and Renaissance sculpture. Back in the city, the Pavia Cathedral rises on Piazza della Vittoria (Pavia), the medieval market square framed by the Broletto; the cathedral’s dome is one of the largest in Italy. The Basilica of San Michele Maggiore, the coronation church, keeps its sculpted facade, biblical capitals, Porta Speciosa and the crucifix linked to Lombard Queen Theodolinde’s era, while the Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro holds the monumental Ark of Saint Augustine above the tomb of Boethius. Visit the Visconti Castle of Pavia for the Civic Museums of Pavia — the Pinacoteca Malaspina fills the noble floor — and the paleochristian Crypt of Sant’Eusebio nearby. Round the day out with the University of Pavia — Central Palace courtyards, the Museum for the History of the University of Pavia, the riverside Tempio Voltiano (Volta Temple Museum) and an evening stroll across the Ponte Coperto (Covered Bridge).

How to experience

Give Pavia a full day, or better an overnight. Morning: Certosa by bus or car from the city. Midday: lunch in the centre near Piazza della Vittoria, then churches — San Michele, San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro — in the cool hours. Late afternoon: castle museums or university courtyards, followed by aperitivo along the Ticino as the light turns gold on the bridge. Guided visits of the Teatro Fraschini, the elegant eighteenth-century opera house, run on scheduled days and are worth planning around. If you come on the first Sunday of a month, check the civic museums’ programme for combined openings, including the crypt. Cyclists can ride the Ticino towpaths; boaters will find the river adds a Venetian slant of light to the skyline.

Practical planning

Trains from Milan take under forty minutes to Pavia station, a flat walk or short bus ride from the centre. Driving is easy via the A7 or ring roads, but the core is a restricted-traffic zone; use car parks along the ring. The Certosa sits beside the A53 with its own exit and parking. Museums keep varied weekly closures — the Certosa museum closes Mondays, civic museums follow their own calendar — so check each official site the week you travel. Spring and autumn are ideal; the cathedral square has little shade in July. Consider the Pavia Card or cumulative civic-museum tickets when offered. Accommodation is modest in price compared with Milan, and the student quarter makes evening eating informal and good value.
