Naples

Naples does not perform for visitors; it simply lives, at full volume, in a Greek street plan two and a half millennia old. Beneath Vesuvius lies a city of baroque chapels and buried Roman theatres, of Caravaggio altarpieces and the world’s most argued-over pizza — chaotic, authentic, and endlessly rewarding to those who slow down enough to read it.

Why visit

Naples is the most intensely layered city in Italy. Its historic centre, inscribed by UNESCO in 1995, sits on the orthogonal grid the Greeks laid out when they founded Neapolis, and walking the ancient decumani today you pass Roman excavations, medieval basilicas, baroque chapels and artisan workshops in a single unbroken mile. The density of great art is staggering: the Farnese sculptures and Pompeian frescoes in the national archaeological museum, Caravaggio’s Seven Acts of Mercy above an altar a few steps from the street, the Cappella Sansevero’s marble Veiled Christ. Naples is also a city of experiences you cannot have elsewhere — descending into a Greco-Roman aqueduct under your own feet, hearing opera in the house where it essentially began, eating pizza in the city that invented it. Nothing here is smoothed for tourists; that rawness is exactly the point, and exactly why the city repays more days than most travellers give it.

Character and history

Greek settlers from Cumae first established Parthenope on the islet where Castel dell’Ovo now stands, then moved to the mainland grid of Neapolis in the sixth century BC. Rome absorbed the city but kept its Greek character; beneath San Lorenzo Maggiore you can still walk the Roman forum and streets. Lombard dukes, Norman kings and the Angevins — who built Castel Nuovo and much of the Gothic core — followed, then the Aragonese, whose star fortress of Castel Sant’Elmo still watches from the Vomero hill. Under Spanish viceroys the city swelled into one of Europe’s largest; the Bourbons made it capital of a kingdom, endowing it with the San Carlo theatre, the Capodimonte collections and the monumental pleasure palace precincts. Each era also built downwards: aqueducts, cisterns, tunnels and hypogea honeycomb the tufa below the streets, and the Rione Sanità, once a valley of villas and burial grounds, preserves paleochristian catacombs where the city’s early Christians and bishops were laid to rest. Religion runs through daily life here like the decumani themselves — nowhere more visibly than in the devotion to San Gennaro, the city’s patron, whose blood is kept in the cathedral.

Begin at the crossroads of art and antiquity: the National Archaeological Museum of Naples holds the masterpieces unearthed at Pompeii and Herculaneum. Nearby, the Sansevero Chapel Museum shelters the astonishing Veiled Christ. On the decumani, the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore opens onto the Neapolis Sotterrata excavations, while Naples Underground takes you forty metres down an ancient aqueduct. The Naples Cathedral enshrines the Chapel of the Treasure of Saint Januarius and a paleochristian baptistery. In the Sanità, the Catacombs of San Gennaro and the hypogeum tombs of the Hypogeum of the Cristallini reveal the city’s deepest layers. Above town, the Certosa di San Martino and Museo di San Martino pairs a charterhouse with the best view of the bay, and the Capodimonte Museum fills a royal palace with paintings. Waterfront symbols complete the circuit: Castel Nuovo, the Egg Castle, the Royal Palace of Naples and Piazza del Plebiscito. In between lie the Majolica Cloister of Santa Chiara, Caravaggio’s altarpiece at the Pio Monte della Misericordia, and the diamond-point facade of the Church of Gesù Nuovo.

How to experience

Naples is best walked in themed days rather than lists. One day for the decumani and their underground; one for the Sanità and its catacombs, entering through the community-run circuit that also links the Fontanelle ossuary; one for the museums of Capodimonte or the archaeological collection; one simply for eating — a pizza lunch is non-negotiable, and breakfast belongs to the sfogliatella. Book the Sansevero Chapel and the catacombs ahead, as entry is capped and timed. Take the funicular to the Vomero for Sant’Elmo’s panorama at dusk. When opera is in season, a ticket at the San Carlo costs less than you expect; otherwise, guided morning tours run through the house.

Practical planning

Fly into Naples Capodichino or arrive by high-speed rail at Napoli Centrale; the historic centre is a short metro or tram ride away. Wear shoes that can handle worn lava-stone paving, keep bags zipped and phones pocketed on crowded lanes, and carry small notes for cafés. Churches close at midday or on weekday afternoons; state museums close on set weekdays — confirm each on its official site before setting out, since hours shift seasonally. Visit in late April–May or late September–October for warm, walkable weather. If Naples is your base, Pompeii, Herculaneum and the coast are all within an hour by the Circumvesuviana or Campi Flegrei lines.
