Mondovì

Mondovì is a city of two levels in the foothills where Piemonte tilts toward Liguria: the busy plain district of Breo below, and the ancient hilltop quarter of Piazza above, crowned by walls and a long belvedere over the Langhe. Founded in 1198, it carries nine centuries of history, a celebrated ceramics tradition and one of Italy’s oldest funiculars.

Why visit

Mondovì rewards travellers who take the trouble to climb. Ride the historic funicular up from Breo and the city opens out: arcaded Piazza Maggiore, baroque church fronts, the cathedral, and gardens on the ramparts with the whole sweep of the Langhe hills below. The ceramics museum honours one of Piemonte’s great artisan traditions; the printing museum tells a quieter story of book culture; and the balloon flights that drift from the valley each season give the city a view of itself few places can match. Less touristed than the Langhe towns it overlooks, Mondovì feels discovered rather than performed — and it makes an excellent, affordable base for the southern Cuneese.

Character and history

The city was born in 1198, when families from the hamlets of Vico, Vasco and Carassone joined forces on the Monte Regale hill to escape feudal lords and founded a free commune. Its position — commanding the routes between the Po plain and the Ligurian coast — guaranteed both prosperity and strife; the bishops of Asti and later the Savoy state contested its liberties, and in 1388 the diocese of Mondovì was erected, entrenching the city’s religious importance. The hilltop quarter of Piazza, “the ancient soul” in the city’s own phrase, filled with convents, colleges and noble palazzi, while the commercial district of Breo grew at the foot of the hill. In the eighteenth century the city’s ceramic workshops made “Mondovì ware” known far beyond Piemonte. The funicular opened in 1886 to link the two halves of the city, closed in 1976, and reopened in 2006 with new cars designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Begin in Breo, the historic commercial heart, and take the Mondovì Funicular — 544 metres of track and 141 seconds of rising views. On the hill, arcaded Piazza Maggiore gathers the Old Town Hall, the Governor’s Palace and noble houses such as Palazzo Fauzone di Nucetto and Palazzo Cordero di Montezemolo. The Cathedral of San Donato anchors the quarter as the diocesan seat, with the nearby Bishop’s Palace keeping its monumental halls. Baroque devotees should seek the Church of San Francesco Saverio, frescoed by the Beaumont brothers. The Civic Tower and Belvedere Gardens deliver the panorama that justifies the climb. Museums come in threes: the Ceramics Museum in Palazzo Fauzone di Germagnano, the Civic Printing Museum at the Orfane cultural hub, and the curious Museums of the Piazza High Schools in the old convent of Nostra Donna. Walkers can close the day on the Landandè Trail, and history readers may seek out the Citadel of Mondovì, the Savoy fortress of the 1570s, and the Synagogue of Mondovì in the old ghetto lanes.

How to experience

Give the hilltop a slow morning: funicular up, coffee on Piazza Maggiore, cathedral and belvedere, then the museums as heat or rain dictates. In season, a balloon flight from the valley is the signature experience — the city styles itself a ballooning capital, and dawn flights over the Langhe sell out early. Time a visit for one of the summer festivals such as Illustrada or the Notte dei Fuochi, when Piazza fills with the whole city. Mondovì also works as a base: it is minutes from the Alta Langa road and an easy run to Vicoforte’s great sanctuary.

Practical planning

Mondovì has a railway station on the Turin–Cuneo line and sits near the A6 motorway, roughly an hour from Turin. Parking is easy below the hill; the funicular spares you the climb, though stair lanes connect the two levels if you fancy the walk. Museum and funicular schedules vary by season — check the city tourism portal and museum sites before travelling. Comfortable shoes, sun protection on the belvedere and a willingness to get pleasantly lost in the contrade will serve you well.
