Milan

1 private tour·63 attractions

Milan is Italy’s economic engine and one of its richest treasure houses: a Gothic cathedral faced in pink-veined marble, Leonardo’s Last Supper on a refectory wall, state galleries, house museums, canals and a design culture that shapes how the whole world lives at home. It rewards travellers who arrive with a plan and a pair of comfortable shoes.

Why visit

Most visitors come for two headlines — the Duomo and the Last Supper — and leave having discovered a layered, walkable city of quiet basilicas, canal-side evenings and some of Europe’s finest art collections. Milan’s texture is different from Rome or Florence: medieval streets open onto rationalist courtyards, Renaissance fresco cycles hide behind modest facades, and contemporary architecture grows beside industrial bones. Fashion and design are not marketing slogans here but the city’s daily language, visible in the shop windows of the Quadrilatero and the galleries of converted factories. Add Italy’s most efficient transport hub and you have the easiest great city in the country to explore.

Character and history

Milan has always been a city of power rather than romance. Roman Mediolanum was an imperial capital; the Ambrosian church tradition made it a centre of early Christianity; and under the Visconti and Sforza dynasties it became the workshop of the Italian Renaissance, employing Bramante and Leonardo da Vinci side by side. Ludovico Sforza commissioned Leonardo’s Last Supper for the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie, painted between 1495 and 1498 in an experimental tempera-on-plaster technique, and added Bramante’s tribune to the church — a complex UNESCO inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1980. Later centuries brought Austrian rule, Napoleon, who had the Pinacoteca di Brera founded in 1809 as a showcase gallery for his kingdom, and the industrial boom that filled the city with liberty-style palazzi, rail stations and factories now recycled into museums and lofts. The Cathedral, begun in 1386 and tended ever since by the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, remains the city’s measure of everything.

What to see

Start on Piazza del Duomo with the Milan Cathedral, whose Candoglia marble still arrives from the same quarry the Fabbrica has worked for centuries, and climb to the Milan Cathedral Rooftop Terraces among the spires. Under the piazza, the Archaeological Area of the Baptistery of San Giovanni alle Fonti preserves early Christian baptisteries, and next door the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II leads to Teatro alla Scala and its La Scala Theatre Museum. West along Corso Magenta, timed entry takes you into Leonardo’s Last Supper beside the cloistered Santa Maria delle Grazie, and around the corner San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is blanketed floor to ceiling in Renaissance frescoes. The rivers of art continue at the Pinacoteca di Brera — from 2024 joined by the modern collection at Palazzo Citterio, completing the Grande Brera project — and inside Sforza Castle, the ducal fortress whose courtyards hold the Pinacoteca of the Sforza Castle, the Museum of Ancient Art of the Sforza Castle and the Egyptian Museum of Milan. Save time for the Navigli Canals District at aperitivo hour and the forested balconies of Bosco Verticale in Porta Nuova.

How to experience

Milan rewards themes. Art lovers can follow Leonardo across a single day: the Cenacolo in the morning, his machine models at the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci, the largest institution of its kind in Italy, founded in 1953. Music lovers should check the Scala season and wander the Brera District afterwards, where the Brera Botanical Garden offers fifteen quiet minutes between galleries. Food is regional rather than generic: risotto alla milanese, cotoletta, panettone in winter, aperitivo everywhere. Evenings belong to the Navigli or the rooftops; mornings to museums. A 72-hour transport pass plus pre-booked timed entries is the local formula — Milan punishes improvisation at the big sites and pays it back generously everywhere else.

Practical planning

Three airports serve the city: Malpensa for long-haul, Linate close in, Bergamo-Orio al Serio for low-cost carriers, all with rail or bus links to the centre. The metro covers nearly every sight; the historic centre is largely pedestrianised with camera-enforced restricted traffic, so park outside or rely on public transport. The Duomo and the Last Supper both require advance booking — official channels are duomomilano.it and cenacolovinciano.org, and Last Supper slots sell out weeks ahead in season. Museums commonly close Mondays (confirm each on its own site), spring and autumn are the pleasantest months, and August sees many restaurants on holiday. Milan is expensive by Italian standards; staying near a metro stop outside the centre keeps budgets sane.

Nearby places

Milan’s position makes day trips almost effortless: lake towns, walled hill towns and duchy cities all sit within an hour by train or car.
