Menaggio

On the western shore of Lake Como, Menaggio faces Bellagio across the lake and Varenna to the east, forming the mid-lake ferry triangle. A resort town since the nineteenth century, it pairs an elegant lakeside promenade with a working village heart, wooded hamlets climbing the hillside, and the green gorge of the Val Sanagra at its back.

Menaggio makes a practical and pleasurable base for the central lake. Car ferries and passenger boats link it directly to Bellagio and Varenna, so you can hop between the three most talked-about towns without driving the narrow shore road. Unlike some of its postcard neighbours, it feels lived in year-round: the arcaded Piazza Garibaldi fills for aperitivo, the lakeside walk is broad enough for an evening stroll, and within minutes you can be on a quiet trail above the roofs. It suits travellers who want lake scenery, walking and swimming without the crush of Bellagio in high season.

Character and history

Geography made the town. Here the Roman-era Antica Strada Regina, the shore road that carried travellers between Como and the north, met the routes climbing towards Lake Lugano and Switzerland, so Menaggio grew as a crossroads and fortified outpost. A castle guarded the junction from the early medieval period until Grisons troops destroyed it in 1523; the church of San Carlo was later raised on the ruins, its bell tower seeming to sail above the old quarter. In the nineteenth century English and German visitors arrived for the climate: the Grand Hotel Victoria opened in 1885, golfers laid out one of Italy’s oldest courses on the hill at Croce in 1907, and the Mylius-Vigoni family created the park and villa at Loveno that since 1986 has housed Villa Vigoni, an Italo-German centre for European dialogue. An earlier livelihood lingers on the lakefront in Francesco Somaini’s marble monument to the silk weavers whose craft once filled the town’s workshops.

The town itself is the first attraction: the Menaggio Lakeshore Promenade runs along the water from the landing stage, and Piazza Garibaldi and Via Mazzini give you cafés, shops and evening passeggiata in one sweep. Climb into the upper town for Church of San Carlo on the castle site and the parish Church of Santo Stefano, and look for the Monument to the Silk Weavers on the lakefront. The hamlets reward short walks: Nobiallo keeps its celebrated Leaning Bell Tower of Nobiallo and the Sanctuary of Madonna della Pace; Loveno leads to Villa Mylius Vigoni, whose roughly forty hectares of parkland and collections open on guided visits. Walkers should head into Val Sanagra Park, a protected river valley with trails beside the Sanagra stream, and follow the Antica Strada Regina north, crossing the hump-backed Bridge of Caravaggio at Nobiallo. Above Croce, the wartime fortifications of La Crocetta and the Cadorna Line look down on the whole lake.

Treat Menaggio as a hub rather than a stop. Milan is about ninety minutes away by car; the simplest public route is the train to Varenna-Esino on the eastern shore, then the frequent ferry across.
