Manduria

Manduria is the capital of Primitivo wine and one of the great Messapian sites of Puglia: megalithic walls and a rock-cut necropolis ring the town, a spring described by Pliny runs in its caverns, and the vineyards produce one of Italy’s most recognisable reds. A quiet town with a dune-backed Ionian shore at its doorstep, it rewards depth-seeking travellers.

Why visit

Wine is the headline, but Manduria is more than a tasting room. Here you can walk between walls the Messapians raised more than two millennia ago, descend to a spring the Roman author Pliny thought remarkable enough to record, and finish the day with a glass of the wine that grew from those same hills. Add a salt-pan nature reserve on the coast and a laid-back seaside quarter, and you have an Apulian town that satisfies archaeologists and oenophiles in the same afternoon.

Character and history

Manduria is a town of Messapian foundation, one of the fierce inland rivals of Greek Taranto, and its megalithic defences and a vast necropolis survive within the archaeological park on its edge. The ancient town was destroyed by Totila’s Ostrogoths in 547 AD; refounded in 1090 by the Norman Ruggero I d’Altavilla under the name Casalnuovo, it kept that name until 1789, when Ferdinando I of Bourbon restored the older one. The land, though, has always mattered more than the politics: Pliny the Elder called Manduria “viticulosa” — vine-covered — and the Primitivo grape made the description permanent. The wine’s modern standing is recent, with DOC recognition about half a century ago, but the culture around it runs unbroken from the Messapian founders to the town’s wine museum. Between the vines lie the quiet extensions of the town’s story: a dune line on the Ionian, salt pans worked since the eighteenth century, and a memory of the twentieth century preserved in a house-museum dedicated to the writer and Shoah witness Elisa Springer.

What to see

The Messapian Walls Archaeological Park is the essential visit: megalithic ramparts, tombs and the Rock Church of San Pietro Mandurino, a tenth-century chapel above a hypogeum basilica of the eighth to ninth centuries with frescoed niches. At the park’s entrance lies the Fonte Pliniano (Pliny’s Spring), an underground cavern where a natural spring feeds a round basin — the very fountain Pliny admired. In town, the Chiesa Matrice of the Most Holy Trinity and the baroque Palazzo Imperiali-Filotico frame the centre, while the monumental Porta Napoli (Arch of Sant’Angelo) survives from the old gates. Museums cover the town’s layers in depth: the Terra dei Messapi Archaeological Museum, the Manduria Civic Museum of history and memory, the Museum of Primitivo Wine Civilization, and the moving Elisa Springer House Museum. Down at the coast, the Sanctuary of San Pietro in Bevagna stands by the sea, and the Salina and Dunes of Torre Colimena Regional Nature Reserve preserves a disused salt pan whose pink shallows and dunes shelter protected Mediterranean habitats.

How to experience

Split your stay between town and coast. Book a cellar visit among the Primitivo vineyards — many producers pair the museum with tastings — and drink the wine where it is grown; the full-bodied reds are the point of the journey. Walk the archaeological park in the morning cool, then drive ten minutes to the Torre Colimena reserve, where a shallow channel cut through rock connects the old salt basins to the sea and the swimming is a local secret no longer. The San Pietro in Bevagna waterfront hums in summer evenings; out of season it reverts to a fishing village calm.

Practical planning

Manduria sits on the Murge tarantine step between Taranto and the Lecce province, easiest by car, with rail connections through the Salento network for those arriving without one. Summer is busy on the coast but hot inland; May-June and September suit both wine and ruins. Two nights covers town and park; add a third for the coastal reserve and a cellar lunch.
