Langhe

The Langhe are the rolling hill country south of the Tanaro, a chessboard of vineyards, hazelnut groves and castellated hilltop villages whose vineyard landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. This is the land of Barolo, Barbaresco, white truffle and the literary countryside of Cesare Pavese — a destination that unfolds one winding road at a time.

Why visit

Few agricultural landscapes anywhere have been composed with such human artistry. Every ridge carries a borgo, every slope its vines, and the views between them — through morning haze, under autumn sun — are the region’s real monument. Wine travellers make the pilgrimage for tastings of Nebbiolo at its most profound; food travellers for truffle season and hazelnut desserts; and slower travellers simply to drive the quiet roads of the upper hills, where pastures and woods replace the famous vineyards. The Langhe suit repetition: one long weekend reveals the classics, and every return visit goes deeper. The cooking is reason enough on its own — tajarin with butter and sage, agnolotti, vitello tonnato, hazelnut everything — and the restaurants hidden among the vines hold some of the most celebrated tables in northern Italy.

Character and history

The name evokes the long, tongue-like ridges of these hills, which have been cultivated since antiquity and shaped over centuries by monastic estates and noble families into the vineyard mosaic visible today. Two Langhe coexist. The Bassa Langa, around Alba, Barolo and La Morra, is the wine engine — Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grown on marl slopes at meticulously chosen exposures. The Alta Langa to the south is wilder: higher, colder, a country of woods, pastures, stone farmsteads and forgotten castles along the old salt road. Woven through both is a literary memory — Cesare Pavese, born in Santo Stefano Belbo, made these hills the setting of some of the most admired novels in twentieth-century Italian literature, and the landscape he described is precisely the one now protected by UNESCO.

What to see

Castles anchor the itinerary. In the Barolo heartland, the medieval Castle of Roddi, a donjon-type fortress with surviving medieval and Renaissance interiors, is managed by the Barolo & Castles Foundation and visited by guided tour; Castle of Verduno pairs its historic walls with a working cellar; and at Castle of Mango the regional wine cellar pours the sweet Moscato d’Asti that rules the eastern hills. Literature has its monument in the Pavese Museum at Santo Stefano Belbo, a multimedia museum built around the writer’s life and personal objects. Viewpoints abound: the village and belvedere of Castiglione Falletto — with its photogenic Big Bench, part of the giant-bench project that has sprouted across these hills — and the 360-degree panorama of the Viewpoint of Diano d’Alba, where Dolcetto reigns. In the southern hills, the millenary tower and borgo of Murazzano open the Alta Langa. For moving through it all, the Romantic Road of the Langhe and Roero strings eleven panoramic stopping points along more than a hundred kilometres of roads and paths, while walkers can take to the vines on the Dolcetto Trail around Diano d’Alba or into the protected woods of the Val Sarmassa Nature Reserve. In Diano d’Alba itself, the baroque Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista and the Rural Civilization Museum at Cascina Rossa preserve the farming memory behind the labels.

How to experience

Travel the Langhe by slow car or bicycle, keeping the itinerary to three or four stops a day and leaving room for the roadside viewpoints that are the region’s signature. Book cellar tastings ahead — the best producers receive by appointment — and time an autumn visit for the Alba truffle season, when the whole region smells of tuber. In the Alta Langa, expect empty roads, sheep pastures and the frescoed chapels and contemporary installations that artists have scattered through the hills. For orientation, follow the Romantic Road’s marked points; for immersion, walk a stretch of vineyard trail at dusk.

Practical planning

The gateway town is Alba, about an hour from Turin; a car is near-essential beyond it. Roads are narrow and winding — small cars, patient drivers. Accommodation ranges from working wineries with rooms to design agriturismi, and books out months ahead for October. Many castles, cellars and museums open only on set days or by reservation, so verify schedules on official sites before travel. Spring brings flowering vines, summer festivals, autumn the harvest and truffles, winter quiet and (in the upper hills) real cold.
