Ivrea

Ivrea sits where the Dora Baltea river leaves the Alps, at the gateway to the Valle d’Aosta road and the heart of the Canavese plain. It is two cities at once: a medieval episcopal town of castle and cathedral, and the bold 20th-century industrial city built around Adriano Olivetti’s typewriter empire — a combination recognised by UNESCO in 2018.

Ivrea’s UNESCO-listed industrial quarter — factories, nurseries, canteens and housing conceived as a single social project — is Europe’s most complete built expression of enlightened 20th-century industry, while the old town keeps a formidable castle, a cathedral layered over Roman remains, and one of the country’s oldest carnivals, famous for its orange-throwing battles. Character and history

The site has been strategic since antiquity: a Roman temple once stood where the cathedral rises today, and the diocese founded in the early Christian era made Ivrea the capital of the Canavese. Bishop Warmondo rebuilt the cathedral in the early 11th century, and the town grew rich on river trade and milling.

Commerce and faith left their mark in convents, confraternity churches and the elegant theatre named for the local playwright Giacosa, whose comedies carried Canavese life onto stages across Italy.

The modern chapter began with Camillo and then Adriano Olivetti, whose typewriter and calculator company transformed a provincial town into a laboratory of industrial civilisation between the 1930s and 1960s. Architects such as Figini and Pollini, Gardella, Zanuso and Vittoria built factories, kindergartens, a canteen and workers’ residences around Adriano Olivetti’s belief that a company should serve the cultural and social life of its community. In 2018 that vision — “Ivrea, industrial city of the 20th century” — became Italy’s 54th UNESCO World Heritage site. The city’s medieval memory survives too in its Carnival, rooted in a legend of 1194, when a miller’s daughter beheaded a tyrant and the townspeople won their freedom; her modern embodiment, the Vezzosa Mugnaia, still leads the celebrations.

Start at Piazza Ottinetti, the civic living room facing the Duomo and the castle, then climb to the Ivrea Castle, a 14th-century fortress whose square towers define the skyline. The Ivrea Cathedral layers a Roman temple, Warmondo’s Romanesque apse and twin towers, a 1516 portico and a neoclassical façade into one edifice, with a crypt holding a Roman sarcophagus; beside it, the Capitular Library of Ivrea guards the diocese’s precious manuscripts. The Garda Civic Museum on the same square mixes archaeology, an oriental collection and paintings. If your dates allow, the Carnival is the city at its most electric — from Epiphany to Ash Wednesday the town fills with pipers, the Phrygian cap of freedom, and the Battle of the Oranges, in which teams of throwers on foot face cart-borne armies in a re-enactment of the medieval revolt. Book well ahead and wear whatever the locals hand you; oranges fly with intent. For a quieter visit, the Visitor Centre’s audio guide ties the UNESCO buildings into one narrative. Cyclists will find the riverbank and the moraine roads unusually gentle for Piemonte, and the surrounding Canavese offers castles and rice-country scenery within short drives.

Practical planning

Ivrea is roughly an hour from Turin by train or car, making it an easy day trip or an overnight stop en route to the Valle d’Aosta or Lake Orta.
