Gulf of Poets

The broad bay east of the Cinque Terre takes its name from the writers who fell under its spell — Shelley and Byron among them — but the Gulf of Poets seduces without a library card. Castles gaze across blue water at Portovenere, fishing villages spill down to pebbled coves, and the Magra river softens into a green delta.

Travellers who want the eastern Riviera’s beauty without its headline crowds gravitate here. The gulf gathers an unusually complete set of experiences into a compact arc: the seafront castle of Lerici, the Shelley associations of San Terenzo, the cliff-clinging fishing village of Tellaro on Italy’s list of most beautiful borghi, the planned Renaissance-like hill town of Montemarcello with its botanical garden, and the quiet archaeological layer of Ameglia and Bocca di Magra at the river mouth. Boats stitch the shores together in season; footpaths along the Caprione promontory link coves reachable no other way. Add beaches such as Venere Azzurra and a food culture of mussels, anchovies and fish restaurants, and the gulf makes a complete slow-travel base.

Character and history

The gulf’s literary nickname is recent shorthand for an old magnetism: Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio wrote of these shores, and in the 1820s Percy Bysshe and Mary Shelley settled at San Terenzo, with Byron swimming the gulf’s waters and later generations of English writers following. Beneath the poetry lies a strategic past. The promontories carried watchtowers and castles — Genoese against Pisan, local against pirate — while the Magra valley formed a borderland between Liguria and Tuscany. Ameglia’s hilltop borgo and its Cafaggio necropolis of the Apuani tribe, a Roman maritime villa at Bocca di Magra, and a medieval monastery above the river mouth record settlement from pre-Roman times onward. Much of the coast now falls within the Montemarcello-Magra Regional Nature Park, which keeps the wilder coves genuinely wild.

The gulf’s monument trail runs from hill to shore. Above Ameglia, the Castle and medieval village of Ameglia (Cafaggio) pairs a ruined castle with an intact borgo, and below it the Cafaggio Necropolis preserves the cremation burials of the Ligurian Apuani. In Montemarcello, the Montemarcello Botanical Garden gathers native plants on Monte Murlo, while the Montemarcello viewpoint surveys the whole arc of the gulf. The park’s wildest corner is the Punta Corvo staircase and beach, a long descent to an empty shore, past the WWII Punta Bianca Battery ruins on the Caprione headland. At the river mouth, the Roman Villa of Bocca di Magra and the hillside Santa Croce del Corvo Monastery close the ancient route between sea and valley. Inland, the Arcola Castle now houses the town hall, and the devotional landscape survives in the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Guardia (Santuario dell’Agostina) at Riccò del Golfo, the Oratory of Nostra Signora dell’Olivo at Follo, and the Pentagonal Tower and castle remains of Vezzano Ligure.

How to experience

Explore by a mix of boat and boot: take the seasonal ferry that circles the gulf and connects to Portovenere and the Cinque Terre, then hike a park trail — the Punta Corvo descent or the ridge paths of the Caprione — to reach beaches the road never meets. Swimmers should try the coves early; boaters and kayakers get the archipelago views. Base yourself in Lerici or San Terenzo for evenings of fish restaurants and the bayside stroll, and dedicate one morning to the hill borghi, ideally ending in Montemarcello around its September fig festival. The park authority and local tourist offices publish seasonal schedules for gardens, villas and boat lines — times shift every year, so verify before setting out.

Practical planning

La Spezia’s railway station is the gateway; buses from there reach Lerici, Montemarcello and the Magra villages, and summer parking is scarce enough that leaving the car at the hotel is wise. May, June and September offer the best weather-to-crowds balance; July and August fill the beaches and the ferry timetable expands accordingly. Some monuments — the Roman villa, the monastery, the botanical garden — open only seasonally or on limited days. Bring water and real shoes for the park trails, which carry full Mediterranean sun.

Across the water, Portovenere heads the gulf and links by boat to the Cinque Terre villages of Riomaggiore and Monterosso al Mare. The city of La Spezia provides museums and rail connections, while the fishing hamlet of Tellaro and the castle town of Lerici are the gulf’s own maritime gems, with Sarzana guarding the valley route inland.
