Gradara

Few villages in Italy wear their Middle Ages as completely as Gradara. A fortified hilltop town on the Marche border with Romagna, its double ring of ramparts presides over the coastal plain towards Gabicce and Cattolica, a few kilometres from the Adriatic. The castle is best known as the setting of one of literature’s most famous love stories.

Why visit

Gradara offers something rare: a medieval ensemble that is genuinely intact rather than reconstructed. You can walk the full circuit of two concentric walls, climb the tower of the Rocca, and stand in rooms associated with Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Polenta, whose tragic story Dante placed in the fifth canto of the Inferno. Beyond the fortress there is a handsome painted loggia, an open-air theatre carved into the rock, a street-art trail spilling over the walls into the hamlet of Fanano, and viewpoints over the San Bartolo promontory. It pairs easily with a beach holiday on the Romagna Riviera or a culture trip to nearby Urbino and Pesaro.

Character and history

Building began in the twelfth century, when the De Grifo family, having taken the area from the commune of Pesaro, raised the first tower. In the thirteenth century Malatesta da Verrucchio, acting on a papal bull, absorbed that tower into the keep of the present Rocca, and under the Malatesta the fortress gained its two rings of curtain walls through the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The most celebrated chapter is the one legend assigns to September 1289, when Paolo and Francesca were killed by Gianciotto Malatesta — the story Dante immortalised. Federico da Montefeltro took the fortress for the papal side in 1463, ending Malatesta rule; the Sforza of Pesaro held the vicariate from 1445 to 1513, years that included the short-lived marriage of Lucrezia Borgia to Giovanni Sforza. Cesare Borgia occupied the town from 1500 to 1503, and in 1513 Pope Julius II granted it to Francesco Maria II Della Rovere, whose family ruled until 1631. After a chain of noble owners, the commune sold the castle in 1877; a private buyer began a careful restoration in the 1920s and the Italian state acquired it in 1928, opening the Rocca fully to the public in 1983.

What to see

The heart of any visit is the Gradara Castle, whose keep, halls and bedroom of the lovers anchor the town’s identity. From the fortress you can continue along the Ronda Walkways, the patrol path atop the double walls that circles the borgo with continuous views over rooftops and sea. In the Piazza V Novembre area, the Gradara Historical Museum traces local history, while the MARV Rubini Vesin Art Museum in Palazzo Rubini Vesin adds a contemporary counterpoint. The Church of San Giovanni Battista is the parish church where a later owner, the marchese Mosca of Pesaro, is buried. Do not miss the unlikely Teatro dell’Aria, an auditorium excavated beneath the piazza, or the Olive Garden off Via Cappuccini for a quieter green corner. Come with time rather than a checklist. The castle operator runs themed guided tours in Italian and English, including itineraries devoted to the Paolo and Francesca story and, in summer, evening openings and Dante-themed walks; check current dates on the official site. Slow travellers should build in the street-art trail and a taste of the local oil and wine country on the surrounding hills.

Practical planning

Gradara sits roughly six kilometres from the Adriatic, between Pesaro and the Romagna border, and is reached most easily by car; the railway stations of the nearby coast connect to Rome, Bologna and Milan, with local buses and taxis covering the last stretch. Footwear with a grip suits the cobbled climbs. The castle keeps daily visiting hours with extended evening openings in the summer season, and the first Sunday of each month typically brings free entry under the national museum initiative — but verify times and tickets on the official castle and tourism sites before you travel, as they vary by season. Parking is easiest below the walls; the borgo itself is pedestrian.
