Italy’s great maritime republic keeps its grandeur folded into a steep amphitheatre of alleys above the port. Genoa — la Superba, as Petrarch called it — pairs Europe’s largest medieval historic centre with Renaissance streets of aristocratic palaces now inscribed by UNESCO, a rebuilt old harbour alive with museums, and a working-city grit that is entirely its own.

Genoa rewards travellers who like their cities layered. In one morning you can stand under tie-dye light in the cathedral treasury, climb a Rolli palace staircase built to impress popes and emperors, and descend into the carruggi for focaccia still warm from the oven. The Strade Nuove and the Rolli palace system, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006, represent a sixteenth-century experiment in urban planning and public hospitality that influenced European architecture for centuries. Add the Mediterranean’s largest maritime museum, an aquarium of international rank, hilltop fortifications with sea views, and day-trip access to Portofino and the Cinque Terre, and the case is closed: this is one of Italy’s most underrated capitals of art and appetite.

Character and history

Genoa’s wealth was made on the water. As one of the great merchant republics, it banked and shipped its way to dominance in the medieval Mediterranean, and the nickname la Superba stuck for good reason. In the late 1500s the aristocracy turned that money into stone: the Strade Nuove — above all Via Garibaldi and Via Balbi — lined their new palaces in a single architectural gesture, and a 1576 Senate decree created the Rolli, official registers of noble residences classified by magnificence and drawn by lot to lodge visiting dignitaries. The lanes below — the carruggi — stayed dense and mercantile, wrapped around the cathedral of San Lorenzo. Emigration and industry marked later centuries, honoured today at the national migration museum in the old harbour, and the modern city remains a working port rather than a stage set, which is precisely its charm.

Start with the UNESCO ensemble: the Strade Nuove and the Rolli Palaces along Via Garibaldi, where the Museums of Strada Nuova unite the picture galleries of Palazzo Rosso (Red Palace) and Palazzo Bianco (White Palace) with Palazzo Doria-Tursi, home of Paganini’s violin. Nearby are the Doge’s Palace on Piazza Matteotti and the state-run Royal Palace on Via Balbi. The Genoa Cathedral (St Lawrence) guards the Byzantine Sacro Catino in its Treasury Museum, and its towers can be climbed on guided visits. Down at the Porto Antico (Old Port), the Aquarium of Genoa, the Galata Maritime Museum with its walk-through submarine Nazario Sauro, and the MEI National Museum of Italian Emigration fill a day. The 1543 Lanterna lighthouse still stands watch above the harbour. For medieval texture, seek the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria di Castello, Columbus’s House by the twin-towered gate of Porta Soprana, and the sculptural riches of the Museum of Sant’Agostino. Art continues at the National Gallery of Palazzo Spinola and the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art. Above the roofs, the Spianata Castelletto viewpoint and the Walls Park and Fortifications (Mura Nuove) ring the heights, while the old fishing cove of Boccadasse and the funerary sculpture of the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno repay the longer walk.

Anchor each day in a different quarter: Rolli palaces and cathedral on day one, the old port’s museums on day two, the hills and Boccadasse on the third. Time a visit for the periodic Rolli Days, when privately owned palaces open their salons to the public. Eat the way locals do — standing at a focacceria in the morning, trofie al pesto at lunch — and ride the lift up to Castelletto at dusk. Practical planning

Fly into Genoa’s airport or arrive by rail; the city is also the natural gateway to the eastern Riviera. The historic centre is steep, cobbled and maze-like, so pack real shoes and use the funiculars and public lifts to save your knees. Pickpockets work the busiest carruggi — normal city caution suffices.
