Genga

Genga is a small hill comune in the Ancona hinterland whose territory holds one of Italy’s great natural spectacles: the Frasassi Caves, a karst labyrinth opened to visitors in 1974 and since counted among the country’s most celebrated show caves. Around the caves stretch a dramatic limestone gorge, an eleventh-century abbey and a rocaille sanctuary set into the cliff.

Why visit

The Frasassi Caves are the reason most travellers come, and they deserve the reputation. Discovered in their modern extent by Ancona speleologists in September 1971, the system includes the Grotta Grande del Vento with its kilometres of passage and the Abisso Ancona, a single vaulted void roughly 180 by 120 metres across and nearly 200 metres high — among the largest caverns in Europe. The show-cave trail keeps a constant fourteen degrees and needs no more than a jacket and an hour or so. But Genga is more than its caves: the Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Nature Park fills the surrounding valley with walking routes and birds of prey, the Abbey of San Vittore alle Chiuse stands in romanesque simplicity on the Sentino, and the octagonal Valadier Temple clings to the gorge wall like a stage set. Few places in Italy pack geology, architecture and gorge scenery into one afternoon.

Character and history

Genga is the ancestral seat of the della Genga family, whose most famous son rose to the papacy as Leo XII, and its castle crowns the hilltop village above the Sentino valley. The gorge below has drawn hermits and pilgrims for a millennium: the rock chapel of Santa Maria infra Saxa existed by 1029, and in 1828 the neoclassical architect Giuseppe Valadier gave the site the octagonal tempietto that shelters it today. Downstream, the abbey of San Vittore alle Chiuse, raised in the eleventh century at a crossing of the Sentino, is a textbook of regional romanesque, its patterned stone front guarding a bare, luminous interior. The caves themselves were opened to the public in 1974 and have shaped the comune’s life ever since; the scientific record runs deep too, from the Gengasaurus ichthyosaur fossil unearthed nearby in 1976 — now the star of the San Vittore museum — to ongoing microbiological research into the cave’s strange, sunlight-free ecosystems.

What to see

Book the Frasassi Caves tour first: the classic route runs about an hour and a half through the Abisso Ancona and chambers such as the stalagmite-filled Sala delle Candeline, while fitter visitors can add blue and red speleological routes lasting two to three hours. Above ground, walk into the Frasassi Gorge and climb to the Valadier Temple, then continue to the belvedere of the fortified hamlet of Pierosara, the classic viewpoint over the gorge’s loop. In San Vittore Terme, the Abbey of San Vittore alle Chiuse and the Speleopalaeontological and Archaeological Museum of San Vittore, with the Gengasaurus, make a natural pair; both museums are included with cave tickets. Up in Genga village, visit the Castle of Genga and its Art, History and Territory Museum, the romanesque Church of San Clemente and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta within the walls.

How to experience

Plan the caves for early in the day — entry times are fixed and sell out in season — then spend the afternoon above ground, where the park’s trails along the Sentino reveal the gorge from angles the tour cannot. Combine the classic tour with a speleological route if you want the caves’ wilder side, or with the abbey and museums if you prefer architecture to helmets. The Valadier temple is best late in the afternoon, when the gorge walls turn amber. In the villages, eat Apennine cooking: truffle pasta, roast meats, and the honey and cheeses of the high pastures, with a glass of Verdicchio from the Jesi hills nearby. Spring and autumn suit hikers best; August belongs to the caves, so reserve well ahead.

Practical planning

The caves are signposted from the SS76 Vallesina road between Fabriano and the coast, with a car park and shuttle to the entrance; the nearest railway stations are Fabriano and the Vallesina line, so a car is the practical choice for combining sites. Tour times, ticket prices and closure periods change through the year — consult frasassi.com before travelling, arrive early as tickets are timed, and remember that the caves stay cool whatever the weather. A combined ticket covers the two museums, and the park authority’s trails are free but unmetered in places — carry water and a map. Lodging is intimate rather than resort-scale: farm stays and guesthouses in Genga, San Vittore and the surrounding valley.

Nearby places

The town of Fabriano, with its paper museum and pinacoteca, lies a quarter of an hour east, while the castle hamlets of Arcevia dot the hills to the south. Down the valley, Jesi and Loreto make cultural stops on the way to Ancona, and the beaches of the Conero Riviera complete a coast-and-caves itinerary within an hour’s drive.
