Gardone Riviera

On the western shore of Lake Garda, Gardone Riviera layers a belle-époque lakeside resort onto one of Italy’s most extraordinary monumental estates. The Vittoriale degli Italiani, the extravagantly theatrical home that poet Gabriele d’Annunzio built above the town, draws visitors from across Europe, while a palm-lined promenade and a sculpture-studded botanical garden give the town a quieter, older rhythm.

The Vittoriale — a ten-hectare monumental park where d’Annunzio lived his last years and which he donated to the Italian state — contains his extraordinary residence, several museums, an open-air amphitheatre still used for summer concerts, a mausoleum where the poet lies buried, and, improbably, a warship embedded in the hillside. Then comes the contrast: a botanical garden where three thousand plant species share paths with works by Rodin, Keith Haring and Niki de Saint Phalle; a lakeside promenade named for a painter and lined with early twentieth-century villas; and, up in Gardone Sopra, a fourteenth-century church and stone lanes far from the lakeside bustle. Character and history

Gardone Riviera lies in the Province of Brescia, on the Riviera dei Limoni stretch of Garda’s western shore, and is counted among “I Borghi più belli d’Italia”. Its modern identity was forged in the decades around 1900, when the mild lakeside climate drew northern European invalids and winterers, hotels and liberty-style villas multiplied, and the “Garden City” character — parks, exotic planting, promenades — took shape. The town’s second act arrived with d’Annunzio, the poet-soldier of the First World War and the Fiume enterprise, who settled here in the 1920s and spent the rest of his life transforming the estate into a personal monument to Italian heroism, complete with trophies, ships and aircraft. He died at Gardone in 1938; the state took over the Vittoriale, and it remains a foundation-run national monument. Between these two stories the town has kept its resort composure: hotel gardens, lakeside cafes, and a gradual climb from waterline to hillside that gives every walk a view.

The Vittoriale of the Italians is the destination in itself. Within its ten hectares, The Prioria (d’Annunzio’s residence) preserves the poet’s rooms, library and archives as he left them; the Regia Nave Puglia (warship) — installed on the hillside a century ago, in 1925 — is an entire cruiser fused into the garden; and the Mausoleum-Shrine of Gabriele d’Annunzio holds the poet’s tomb at the park’s summit. Multiple small museums inside the estate explore different facets of his life. In town, the Fondazione André Heller Botanical Garden unites a nineteenth-century naturalist’s plant collections with sculpture by major modern artists, water lily ponds and ginkgos. Up in Gardone Sopra, the Church of San Nicolò da Bari is a fourteenth-century parish rebuilt in the eighteenth. Near the lake, Villa Alba — a name meaning, as its custodians like to recall, “peace in the landscape” — stands in its century-old park as a monument to the resort era, and the Paul Heyes Lakefront Promenade strings the villas together along the water.

How to experience

Devote a full day to the Vittoriale: book the house tour in advance, then walk the park at leisure, ending at the mausoleum for the lake view. The amphitheatre’s summer concert programme is one of Italy’s most atmospheric — check the foundation’s calendar. On a second day, work between the Heller garden in the morning, lunch by the lake, and an afternoon stroll along the promenade to Villa Alba. For walkers, a path and road connect the lakeside quarter with Gardone Sopra, where the church and quiet lanes reward the climb. The ferry stop links Gardone with Salò, Maderno and the eastern shore in season, making a boat-and-walk day easy.
