Character and history

The modern town is a marriage of distinct communities: Finalmarina on the waterfront, the fishing and monastic quarter of Finalpia to the east, and Finalborgo inland, long the seat of the Del Carretto marquises whose castles still watch from the ridges. Under Genoese and later Spanish rule the coast fortified itself, and traces of that vigilance survive in the seafront monuments. Finalmarina grew into one of the Riviera’s most polished seaside towns, with a shopping streetscape that attracts a discerning clientele, while Finalpia — called the “quarter of spirituality” by the local tourism office — keeps its Benedictine abbey and a quiet pedestrian core. Facing the beach on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II stands the Arch of Margaret of Spain, a triumphal arch raised for the Spanish queen who landed here, beside the Platea Magna Merchant Loggia, a medieval trading hall that recalls the town’s commercial age. Eastward at Capo San Donato, the Castelfranco Fortress, a fourteenth-century Genoese stronghold, rises between Finalmarina and Finalpia, whose Abbey of Our Lady of the Assumption (Finalpia Abbey) remains a working Benedictine sanctuary. On the headland, the Mausoleum of General Caviglia commemorates the First World War marshal. In the hills, the quarter of Perti preserves the Church of Our Lady of Loreto (Perti) and the walls of the Castrum Perticae (Byzantine fortress of Sant’Antonino), while the valley hamlet of Orco keeps the ruin of its own Medieval Castle of Orco.

Practical planning

Finale Ligure has its own station on the Genoa–Ventimiglia line, and the three quarters are all walkable from it, so cars are optional; parking is easiest at the seafront ends. The beach season peaks from June to September, while spring and autumn are better for trails and sightseeing, and winter stays mild. Summer weekends bring traffic on the coast road, so arrive early or by train. Book sea-view rooms well ahead in August. The walled quarter of Finalborgo is the essential neighbour, and the former fishing village of Varigotti lies just west along the shore. Further along the coast you reach the tower town of Noli, then Albenga and Alassio, while Savona is the provincial capital to the north-east.
