Character and history

The name means cathedral of the Ossola, and the town has served as the valley capital since the Middle Ages, guarding the junction of five Alpine valleys and the route to the Simplon. Its centre grew around the arcaded Piazza Mercato, still the scene of a lively Saturday market — the trade fair privilege that shaped the city. On the hill above, the fortified site of Mattarella, with remains reaching back to late antiquity, was crowned by a medieval castle destroyed in 1415; from 1656 Capuchin friars began laying out the Calvary path up the same slope, a sculpted and painted devotion in fifteen chapels that grew over two centuries and was inscribed with the Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2003.
