Corinaldo

1 private tour·16 attractions

Corinaldo keeps its ring of fourteenth-century walls almost whole: 912 metres of crenellated curtain and round towers above the Nevola valley in Ancona’s hinterland. Inside lies a steep medieval borgo with a legendary well, a jewel-box theatre and the birthplace of a saint; outside, farmland and an ancient princely tomb. Among Italy’s most beautiful villages, it wears its honours lightly.

Why visit

Corinaldo is the Marche’s wall town. Where most hilltop centres lost their fortifications to growth or cannon, here the complete circuit survives — walkable along its ramparts, punctuated by three gates, and considered among the most impressive in the region. That alone would justify the detour from the coast, but the town inside the walls rewards an unhurried afternoon: the Piaggia staircase climbs 104 steps past the Polenta Well, the setting of the town’s best-loved legend and its summer festival; the tiny nineteenth-century Goldoni Theatre hides behind a noble facade; and the story of Santa Maria Goretti, born in the countryside here in 1890, draws pilgrims to a shrine on the main street. Add an archaeological site with the tomb of a Picene prince, cycle routes through the hills, and the orange-flag standard of the Touring Club, and Corinaldo becomes the ideal half-day between Senigallia and the interior.

Character and history

The walls tell the town’s story twice. The original settlement was razed in 1360 by the army of Pope Innocent VI under the condottiero Galeotto I Malatesta; seven years later Pope Urban V authorised rebuilding, and the superb curtain that survives today — with its swallow-tail battlements, murder holes and moated towers — is the result, extended in the Renaissance between 1484 and 1490 with works attributed to the Sienese architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The well at the foot of the Piaggia carries the town’s comic legend: a man was said to have fallen into it clutching his sack of corn flour, and gossip had him living inside, eating polenta — a story locals have celebrated for decades in the Contesa del Pozzo della Polenta. Modern Corinaldo balances heritage with rural life — Verdicchio vineyards, cycling awards, a much-loved camper stop — and each October its streets fill with one of Italy’s best-known Halloween celebrations, which has become part of the town’s contemporary identity alongside the medieval reenactment scenes of August.

What to see

Begin at the walls themselves: the Corinaldo Town Walls and their towers are best appreciated by walking the perimeter from the Porta Nova to the Gate of Santa Maria del Mercato, then climbing the Piaggia for the well. In the upper town, the Collegiate Church of San Francesco and the Bell Tower of San Pietro mark the skyline, while culture-seekers should find the Carlo Goldoni Municipal Theatre, the Claudio Ridolfi Municipal Art Collection of local painting, and the Gian Carlo Bojani Contemporary Art Ceramics Collection, an unusual nod to the town’s craft connections. Pilgrims and the curious alike head for the Diocesan Shrine of Santa Maria Goretti and, in the hamlet of Sant’Angelo, the Birthplace of Santa Maria Goretti. Just outside town, the Santa Maria in Portuno archaeological area preserves the Prince’s Tomb and the remains of an early medieval church complex; the Shrine of the Incancellata and the small Church of Sant’Anna complete the religious circuit.

How to experience

Walk the walls at golden hour, when the light rakes the battlements and the valley below turns amber — locals call the town a peaceful oasis, and the ramparts are where you feel it. Then work your way up the Piaggia, where the well still anchors the polenta legend, and finish with dinner of classic Marchigiano country cooking under the walls, ideally with a carafe of Verdicchio. If your dates allow, plan around the town’s two signature festivals — the Polenta Well contest in July and the medieval-life scenes of mid-August — checking current programmes on the official tourism portal. Cyclists will find signed routes through the surrounding hills, and the surrounding country roads are quiet enough for a relaxed loop.

Practical planning

Corinaldo sits about twenty minutes inland from Senigallia and the A14, so a car is the practical choice; parking sits at the base of the walls, and the centre is steep and stepped — pack accordingly. The tourist office on Via del Corso can confirm opening arrangements for the theatre, collections and archaeological site, which keep limited hours outside the summer season; verify details at corinaldoturismo.it before travelling. A serviced camper area near the sports ground reflects the town’s popularity with road-trippers. Accommodation is concentrated in small bed-and-breakfasts and country farm stays in the surrounding hills.

Nearby places

Senigallia brings the coast and its celebrated food scene within twenty minutes, while Jesi offers Renaissance squares in Verdicchio country. The castle hamlets of Arcevia ring the hills to the south, Offagna and the Conero Riviera lie towards the sea, and the cave country of Genga makes an easy inland excursion.
