Cividale del Friuli

Where the green Natisone river cuts a gorge, Cividale keeps the memory of being first. Founded as Forum Iulii under Julius Caesar, it became the Lombards’ first capital in Italy, and its eighth-century Tempietto — a jewel-box of carved stucco — anchors a UNESCO World Heritage site. A devil-built bridge, a hypogeum and quietly excellent museums complete one of Friuli’s essential towns.

Why visit

Cividale delivers medieval atmosphere without the crowds of better-known hill towns, and its art is of European rather than merely local importance. The Lombard Temple is one of the supreme survivals of eighth-century decoration anywhere, the cathedral treasury gathers goldsmith work of the dark ages, and the National Archaeological Museum explains the Lombard kingdom from its own ground zero. Add the theatre of the river gorge, with the arched Devil’s Bridge spanning it, and the maze of a pre-Roman underground chamber whose purpose still puzzles scholars. Cafés, good Friulan cooking and the entrance to the Natisone valleys make an easy stay of it.

Character and history

The Romans built a castrum here around the mid-first century BC, and Julius Caesar transformed the settlement into a forum that took his name: Forum Iulii, the market of Julius, later the name-giver of all Friuli. When Alboin’s Lombards swept into Italy in 568, Cividale was their first great prize and the seat of the Duchy of Friuli, the most important of their duchies. Charlemagne’s Franks took the town in the 770s and renamed it Civitas Austriae, the city of the east; after 1077 it served as capital of the Patriarchal State of Friuli, then passed to Venice in 1420 and to Italy in 1866. On 25 June 2011 the Lombard heart of the historic centre entered the UNESCO World Heritage list within the serial site “The Lombards in Italy: the Places of Power”.

The twentieth century left two marks: the First World War front ran through these valleys — remembered today in the town’s Great War museum — and the 1976 earthquake damaged the centre, afterwards patiently restored.

What to see

Start with the ensemble of the Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle, whose cloistered complex guards the Lombard Temple (Tempietto Longobardo): a tiny cross-shaped oratory whose western wall carries stucco figures of holy women in classical drapery, among the most refined works of the early Middle Ages. Cross the Devil’s Bridge — its high single arch has spanned the Natisone gorge since the fifteenth century, and the legend of its diabolical builder is retold on every corner — then climb to Cividale Cathedral (Santa Maria Assunta) on the piazza above, where the Christian Museum and Cathedral Treasure (MuCris) displays the baptistery of Patriarch Callistus and gold altar work, including the extraordinary Ratchis altar.

The National Archaeological Museum of Cividale del Friuli, in the Palazzo dei Provveditori Veneti, holds the great Lombard funerary finds. Descend into the eerie Celtic Hypogeum (Ipogeo Natisone), chambers cut into the rock whose original purpose — tomb? prison? — remains open to interpretation. Art and memory continue at Palazzo de Nordis – De Martiis Family Collection, the riverside Canussio Castle with its Roman masonry, the Gothic ex-Church of San Francesco (former church) used for exhibitions, the fourteenth-century Medieval House (Casa Medioevale) with its external stone stair, and the Town Hall of Cividale (Palazzo Pretorio). The Great War Museum of Cividale del Friuli occupies the former railway station, and the puppetry collection of the Vittorio Podrecca International Centre – Teatro Meraviglie honours the town’s celebrated marionettist. In the hills above, the Sanctuary of Madonna di Castelmonte ranks among the oldest Marian shrines of Friuli, and the Parco Acrobati del Sole (birds of prey park) flies falcons for families.

How to experience

Cross the bridge twice — once at midday, once at dusk when the gorge turns blue — and walk the Lombard quarter around the piazza of Paolo Diacono, the Lombard historian born here. Visit the Tempietto early; numbers inside are limited and the hush is part of the effect. Drive or hike into the Natisone valleys, where Slovene is still spoken and osterie serve frico and refosco. Practical planning

Cividale lies about 15 kilometres north-east of Udine, reached by car or by a scenic little rail line from the city; parking sits just outside the walls. Museum and Tempietto openings rotate through the week, so check tempiettolongobardo.it, mucris.com and the town’s cividale.com portal before your visit rather than trusting fixed hours. Allow a full day for the town plus Castelmonte; two if you add valley hiking. Spring and autumn are ideal, with chestnut season in the valleys a quiet highlight.
