Cinque Terre

1 private tour·13 attractions

Where the Ligurian coast folds into steep hills, five villages cling to cliffs above a sea that changes colour by the hour. Cinque Terre is a worked landscape as much as a destination: a thousand years of dry-stone terracing, vineyards and fishing tracks between mountains and water, protected as a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape.

Why visit

Few places in Italy compress so much variety into so little space. In a single day you can walk a clifftop path from Riomaggiore to Monterosso, swim from a rock platform, taste the honeyed dessert wine Sciacchetrà made on terraces you have just hiked above, and end with anchovies and fried fish in a harbour square. The UNESCO inscription of 1997 recognised exactly this: a landscape where human settlement and a dramatic coast have shaped each other for centuries. It rewards slow travel — visitors who arrive by train and explore on foot see a completely different place from those who only snap photos from the water.

Character and history

The five villages — Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare — began as agricultural and fishing settlements, isolated from the hinterland by the coastal range. Prosperity came under the Republic of Genoa, which from the sixteenth century helped turn these hamlets into functioning maritime communities with small defensive structures and parish churches. The defining work, though, was agricultural: generations of families built and maintained the dry-stone walls that hold narrow terraces of vines, lemons and olives on slopes that would otherwise simply slide into the sea. That labour is the reason the area now holds both national park and UNESCO status, and it remains visible everywhere you walk. Life here has always been shaped by isolation; even today the train is the most reliable way in.

What to see

The park runs visitor centres in each of the five villages — start at the Riomaggiore Park Visitor Centre or the Manarola Park Visitor Centre (Park Headquarters) for trail conditions and maps, with sister centres at Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The coastal classic is the Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro, SVA2), whose most famous section is the Way of Love (Via dell’Amore) between Riomaggiore and Manarola; sections open and close for maintenance, so check current status before setting out. For solitude, the High Way of the Cinque Terre (Ridge Trail No. 1) runs along the spine of the hills, linking the five hillside sanctuaries — among them the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montenero above Riomaggiore, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Reggio above Vernazza, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Soviore above Monterosso, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Health (Montefienale) above Manarola and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace (San Bernardino) above Corniglia — quiet stone retreats with sweeping sea views.

How to experience

Travel light and travel by train: the Genoa–La Spezia line stops in all five villages, and cars are more burden than help. Buy the Cinque Terre Card (a trekking version, or a train-plus-trails version) from the park, online or at visitor centres, since it covers trail access and contributes to maintenance of the paths and walls. Walk one section in the morning, swim in the afternoon, and save one day for the high sanctuaries route, where you will share the path with locals rather than crowds. Sample the local whites and the rare Sciacchetrà in the villages’ small enoteche, and eat anchovies — Monterosso’s are famous. The park also arranges guided walks, kayaking and diving in the protected marine area; timings and availability are listed on the official park site, parconazionale5terre.it.

Practical planning

Late spring and early autumn offer the best balance of open trails, warm water and thinner crowds; summer is glorious but busy, and high heat makes the steep paths demanding. Sturdy shoes matter more than beachwear fashion — many trails are stone steps and gravel. Trail status changes frequently after rain or works, so confirm conditions at a visitor centre or on the park website the same day you hike. Accommodation in the villages books out far ahead; staying in La Spezia or Levanto with a rail pass is a sound alternative. Trains are frequent, but check timetables outside the peak season.

Nearby places

Beyond the villages themselves, the headland of Portovenere closes the gulf to the south with its own UNESCO-listed church and castle, while the city of La Spezia just inland provides museums, accommodation and the main rail hub for the whole coast. Both are a short train or boat ride from Riomaggiore.
