Cesenatico’s waterfront is the reason to come. The Porto Canale Leonardesco — its design traditionally attributed to Leonardo da Vinci around 1502 — runs straight from the old town to the open sea, lined with coloured houses and, along its inner reach, the floating section of the Museo della Marineria: ten historic bragozzi and trabaccoli moored under their symbol-of-the-port sails, restored each year in brilliant traditional patterns. The museum’s land section, built like a great shipyard, completes one of the most distinctive maritime collections in Italy. Beyond the canal, the town works every angle of the good life: Blue Flag beaches held for decades, a pine forest at Zadina, piadina and seafood trattorie, and a cycling culture built around favourite son Marco Pantani, celebrated in the town’s routes and memorials. It is compact enough to walk, authentic enough to feel like a fishing port, and friendly to families without turning generic.

Character and history

The harbour exists because politics moved slowly. In the early sixteenth century Cesare Borgia’s engineer Leonardo sketched measures for the port at the mouth of the ancient canal that drained the valley; the canal port that resulted became the seagate of Cesena’s hinterland and, in time, a fishing fleet’s home. Garibaldi’s story brushes the quay — the town keeps the memory of his passage along this coast — and the nineteenth century layered shipyards, sail lofts and the sailors’ quarter along the water. Poet Marino Moretti was born here, and his preserved house, complete with autograph manuscripts, gives the town a literary anchor to set against its maritime one. The twentieth century brought the beach economy without erasing the fishing one: boats still unload by the canal, fish still reaches the trattorie within hours, and the port’s two piers with their lighthouses still shelter a working fleet. The Leonardo Canal Port (Porto Canale Leonardesco) is the town’s stage; walk its length, then board the Maritime Museum – Floating Section to see the ten historic vessels and their painted sails at close range. The indoor Maritime Museum – Land Section, at Via Armellini 18, displays more boats in shipyard setting, navigation instruments and workshop tools, and the attached Cesenatico Antiquarium (Ad Novas) shows Roman finds from the ancient coastal settlement whose name survives in the canal’s oldest layers. Literary travellers should book the Marino Moretti House Museum, the poet’s home kept as he left it, and art lovers the Leonardo da Vinci Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery — a municipal gallery installed in the former fish market. Alongside these, the Parish Church of San Giacomo Apostolo stands at the canal’s head, the Cesenatico Municipal Theatre anchors the cultural season, and the port’s two molo — the Levante Pier and Capitaneria Lighthouse and the Ponente Pier and Green Entrance Lighthouse with its fishermen’s capanni — frame the harbour mouth, where the Vincian Gates (Porte Vinciane) mark the canal’s entry. The Zadina Pine Forest shades the coast road west of the centre.

Do the maritime thing first: join a guided visit among the bragozzi and trabaccoli, try a hand at sail-handling and knots in the museum’s workshop sessions, and if timing allows, sign up for the historic sailing school’s outings aboard the trabaccolo Barchèt or the bragozzo San Nicolò. Anglers of appetite should simply eat — the fish market and canal-side trattorie serve brodetto, grilled cuttlefish and the local takes on Adriatic sardines, with pescaturismo day-trips letting you fish aboard a real boat. Cyclists have a pilgrimage to make: the town honours Marco Pantani with dedicated routes and memorials, and flat coastal roads make it a family-cycling capital. In summer, the canal becomes an evening promenade — book a table waterside, then watch the lit sails of the floating museum. Photographers get the shot of the coloured sails at golden hour from the Ponte sul Porto. The beach clubs, pine walks and small spas round out the days for mixed groups.

Cesenatico sits on the Riviera di Romagna between Rimini and Cesena, with the nearest railway stations at Cesena (about 20–25 minutes by bus or car) and Rimini; coastal buses and the cycling network knit the towns together. The historic centre and canal are pedestrian-friendly, with car parks signed at the edges.
