Cernobbio

Cernobbio rests on the western shore of Lake Como a few kilometres from the city, where the mountains of the Bisbino rise straight out of the water and the villas begin. It pairs the neoclassical Villa Erba and the Art Nouveau Villa Bernasconi with a tight medieval borgo, a palm-lined promenade and a mountain sanctuary above the rooftops.

Cernobbio concentrates a remarkable amount of Lake Como’s personality into a small space. Within a short walk you can tour a multimedia Art Nouveau house-museum, wander a hundred-year-old English park at the water’s edge, and lose yourself in the lanes of the historic borgo behind the piazza. Above the town, a road winds up Monte Bisbino to a mountain sanctuary with views across the whole lake basin. Add a well-kept promenade, ferry connections to the central lake and a calendar of exhibitions and events, and the case for at least two nights here becomes obvious — particularly for travellers interested in design and industrial history, since the town’s villas were built by silk fortunes.

Character and history

The town grew from a fishing and farming settlement at the foot of the mountain into one of the lake’s most fashionable addresses in the nineteenth century, when Como’s silk dynasties chose this stretch of shore for their villas. Davide Bernasconi built his silk mill and then, in the liberal atmosphere of the early twentieth century, the family’s new residence — a house wrapped in decorative frescoes that has become one of the region’s signature Liberty buildings. The Erba estate, laid out beside the water for one of the great pharmaceutical and silk families, later passed to the Visconti and now serves as an international congress and exhibition centre. Behind the lakefront, the borgo keeps its medieval plan and hosts a beloved village festival each September.

Start at the Villa Bernasconi Museum, the “house that speaks”: an interactive, multisensory museum where the building narrates its own history and that of the Bernasconi silk dynasty, with drawers to open and a telephone to answer. Next door, Villa Erba offers the contrast of neoclassical grandeur — a historic residence, a vast century-old park of about one hundred thousand square metres sloping to the lake, and a busy programme of fairs and cultural events. On Piazza del Risorgimento, the neo-Romanesque Church of the Santissimo Redentore serves as the modern parish church, while the older Church of San Vincenzo by Piazza Tolomeo Gallio preserves the town’s earliest devotional art. The lakeside promenade and Piazza Boldini are the town’s open-air living room. For a half-day excursion, drive or walk up to the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Bisbino on the mountain at over a thousand metres, where the view stretches the length of the lake. How to experience

Give the morning to Villa Bernasconi when the light fills its conservatory, the early afternoon to Villa Erba’s park, and the late afternoon to the borgo’s lanes and a coffee on the piazza. Boats from the nearby jetty connect to Tremezzo, Bellagio and Como, making car-free days entirely feasible. Walkers can take the mule path towards Rovenna and continue towards the Bisbino sanctuary — check conditions and opening arrangements locally before setting out. Time a visit for one of the lake’s concours, festivals or exhibitions at Villa Erba if you enjoy a spectacle, or avoid them if you prefer the town quiet. Evenings belong to the lakefront: swim off the lido, then join the passeggiata.

Cernobbio is reached from Como by the lakeside road or frequent urban and regional buses; Milan’s airports are under an hour away by car. Parking near the centre is limited and charged, so visitors staying in town are best leaving the car parked. The shore continues in both directions: Moltrasio, Carate Urio and Laglio towards the north, and Brunate on the mountain above Como, reachable by funicular from the city.
