Casale Monferrato

Casale Monferrato, on the right bank of the Po, was the capital of the Marquisate of Monferrato. Its compact centre holds a Romanesque cathedral, a medieval castle, a forest of Baroque palazzi and a 1595 synagogue ranked among the finest in Europe — depth, wine country and quiet cycling roads without the queues.

Why visit

Casale rewards the traveller who has done the famous circuit and wants substance with breathing room. The historic centre can be crossed on foot in twenty minutes yet holds a Romanesque duomo, a Gonzaga-era fortress, five or six distinguished Baroque churches, and a Jewish museum complex of European rank. The surrounding Monferrato hills pour Ruché and Grignolino wines within sight of the medieval towers, and the flat Po plain beyond is prime cycling country. Food leans Monferratese — agnolotti, bagna cauda, amaretti — served in trattorie where tourists are still a novelty.

Character and history

Casale’s golden age arrived when the marquesses of Monferrato, the Greek-descent Palaiologos dynasty, made it the permanent seat of their court in the late fifteenth century; the imposing castle at Piazza Castello belongs to their reign. Gonzaga rule after 1536 brought heavy fortification, and sieges in the following centuries scarred the city — but the rebuilding that followed, above all in the eighteenth century, draped Casale in the Baroque finery that gives it its epithet as a baroque city. The cathedral of Sant’Evasio is older than all of it: a Lombard Romanesque church consecrated by Pope Paschal II in 1107 on the site of earlier temples, its narthex showing distant Armenian artistic echoes. The Jewish community, present continuously since 1595, built behind an unremarkable street façade one of the glories of European synagogue architecture, today the heart of a museum complex. Along the Via Mameli corridors, noble palazzi keep painted façades and courtyards that hint at the city’s mercantile confidence.

What to see

The Cathedral of Sant’Evasio is the essential first stop — its bulging narthex, twelfth-century crucifix and traces of the medieval mosaic floor reward a slow visit; the adjacent Cathedral Sacristy Museum displays the treasury. Across the centre, the Castle of Monferrato anchors Piazza Castello together with the 1791 Municipal Theatre, one of the oldest working theatres of the region, and the frescoed Church of Santa Caterina. The city’s emblem, the Civic Tower of Santo Stefano, rises near the equestrian statue of Carlo Albert on Piazza Mazzini.

The Synagogue – Jewish Museum Complex should be booked ahead: the visit takes in the luminous 1595 prayer hall, the Museo degli Argenti with one of Europe’s most important Jewish art collections, and the Museo dei Lumi. Art and sculpture lovers head to the ex-convent of Santa Croce for the Civic Museum and Bistolfi Plaster Cast Gallery, where over 180 plaster models of Leonardo Bistolfi’s symbolist monuments fill a fifteenth-century cloister. Church-crawlers should add San Domenico with its great canvases by Pietro Francesco Guala, Sebastiano Guala’s San Filippo Neri, the octagonal San Michele, and the Sacrario del Monferrato war shrine, while architecture spotters can hunt the Baroque façades of Palazzo San Giorgio, Palazzo Magnocavalli, Palazzo Treville and Palazzo Sannazzaro, and the Gothic complexes of the Palace of Anna d’Alençon and Palazzo del Carretto. The War Memorial by Bistolfi closes the loop with the sculptor’s civic work.

How to experience

Give Casale a slow weekend rather than a rushed half-day. Morning: the cathedral and castle. Midday: lunch downtown, then the synagogue complex at its afternoon booking slot — visits run on guided schedules, so reserve online through the Casale Braica foundation. Late afternoon: coffee and amaretti under the porticoes, then climb toward the civic tower district for rooftop views. If you have a car, spend a day among the Monferrato hills — the vineyard roads toward the Ruché villages and the infinite rice flats of the Vercellese border make an easy loop, and cellar doors are generally happy to receive callers. Practical planning

Casale lies about sixty kilometres east of Turin, with a railway station served by regional lines toward Turin, Alessandria and Vercelli; drivers reach it from the A21 and A26 corridors. The centre is flat and entirely walkable, with parking around the historic core’s edges. Guided access is the rule for the synagogue complex, the castle’s exhibition spaces and some palazzi — check schedules before planning a tight itinerary. Summer can be hot on the plain; spring and autumn are ideal, and the wine villages of Monferrato are at their best during the autumn harvest weeks. Hotels are modest but adequate; many travellers base themselves in the hills instead.
