Campobasso

0 private tours·15 attractions

Campobasso, Molise’s regional capital, pairs a medieval hilltop borgo crowned by a Norman castle with an airy nineteenth-century lower town. It is the home of the Misteri procession, living tableaux carried through the streets since the eighteenth century, and an easy, authentic base for exploring one of Italy’s least-visited regions.

Why visit

Campobasso rewards travellers who want to see an Italian regional capital without crowds, tour buses, or inflated menus. The city divides into two compelling halves: the medieval borgo clinging to the slopes of the Monte hill beneath Monforte Castle, and the rational, elegant “Murattian” grid below, laid out in the nineteenth century and nicknamed the “città giardino” for its greenery. Add the famous Misteri procession, a Samnite archaeology museum of real importance, and a distinctive local food culture, and you have a city that feels genuinely lived-in rather than staged for visitors. It also works beautifully as a practical hub: roads to Sepino, Termoli, Agnone and the Matese mountains all begin here.

Character and history

The city’s name is usually traced to “Campus Vassorum,” the field of the vassals, a hint at its Lombard origins. Written records reach back to the ninth century, and Lombard defensive walls were raised on the hill over the remains of older Samnite fortifications. Around the year 1000 the town passed to the counts of Bojano, then flourished under the Normans and, decisively, under Cola di Monforte in the late fifteenth century: he rebuilt the castle, ringed the town with walls and gates, and gave the upper borgo much of its form. Later feudal lords included the di Capua, the Gonzaga and the Carafa.

A destructive earthquake in 1456 and later rebuilding shaped the fabric you see today. The nineteenth century brought the ordered lower town with its straight axes, government palace and neoclassical cathedral, while the early twentieth century added wrought-iron balconies — a nod to the city’s ironworking past — and its Liberty-style theatre. Campobasso today is a university town and administrative centre that keeps its traditions unusually alive.

What to see

Start at the top. Monforte Castle stands on the hill in a quadrangular plan with four towers, a drawbridge and a broad courtyard, guarding views across the whole city and the surrounding hills. Below it winds the Medieval Old Town of Campobasso: steep lanes, long stairways, courtyarded houses and carved stone portals with coats of arms.

The borgo preserves a remarkable cluster of Romanesque churches — San Giorgio with fourteenth-century frescoes, San Bartolomeo with its arched portals, and San Leonardo with a single graceful monofora window. Lower down, the baroque Church of Sant’Antonio Abate holds a gilded wooden altar and a carved organ from 1696, while Santa Maria della Croce, seat of the ancient Crusaders’ confraternity, still echoes with the haunting Molise hymn “Teco vorrei” during Holy Week.

In the lower town, the neoclassical Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity faces Piazza Gabriele Pepe beside the Liberty-style Savoia Theatre. Villa de Capoa is a rare survivor — an eighteenth-century Italian garden with mazes and marble statues spread over some 16,000 square metres — and Villa dei Cannoni offers a leafier, more local stretch of green. Two museums anchor the cultural itinerary: the Provincial Samnite Museum in Palazzo Mazzarotta, with its important collection of Samnite artefacts, and the small, atmospheric Museum of the Misteri, where the thirteen bare wooden “ingegni” of the procession stand on show year-round alongside film of processions going back to 1929. For a deeper dive into local identity, the MUVES Museum of Traditional Dress interprets Molise costume and craft.

How to experience

Time a visit around the city’s signature event if you can. On the feast of Corpus Domini, the Processione dei Misteri sees thirteen living tableaux — saints’ scenes designed in the mid-1700s by local artist Paolo Saverio di Zinno — carried through the streets on towering machines by some two hundred bearers, with costumed figures perched in daring structures. The Museum of the Misteri is the ideal preparation or follow-up. Other traditions punctuate the year: the Infiorata flower-petal carpets of late May, the costumed Crociati e Trinitari re-enactment in Piazza Gabriele Pepe, and a Good Friday procession sung by a choir of hundreds.

Day to day, do what locals do: climb to the castle in the late afternoon, linger over coffee on the Murattian grid, and eat Molise food — cavatelli with pork sauce, homemade crioli, fennel and baccalà soup, “pizza e minestra,” and mostaccioli at Christmas. Ask for a glass of local Pentro di Isernia or Tintilia wine.

Practical planning

Campobasso sits in central Molise, roughly midway between the Apennine interior and the Adriatic, and is reachable by train from Termoli on the Adriatic line or by road from Naples, Rome and Pescara. The city stands at around 700 metres above sea level, so evenings can be cool even in summer — bring a layer. The upper borgo involves steep lanes and stairways; comfortable shoes are essential, and drivers should use the car parks at the edges rather than attempting the medieval streets. Museum hours, including those of the Misteri museum, vary through the year: check the official municipal site (comune.campobasso.it) and the regional tourism portal visitmolise.eu before setting out.

Nearby places

Within the same province, the Adriatic port town of Termoli makes an easy day trip by road or rail, combining a fortified borgo with beaches and ferries to the Tremiti Islands. Campobasso also puts Sepino’s Roman ruins, Agnone’s bell foundry and the Matese mountains within striking distance for a longer Molise circuit.
