Campi Flegrei

Campi Flegrei, the burning fields west of Naples, is a living volcanic caldera dressed in Roman ruins. Across Bacoli, Miseno, Monte di Procida and Pozzuoli, cisterns, tombs and theatres of antiquity share the ground with crater lakes, new mountains and a sea that breathes with the earth.

Why visit

Nowhere else does geology and ancient history collaborate so closely. The caldera’s slow movements have raised and lowered the coastline for millennia, sinking Roman ports and reshaping bays, while the Ministry of Culture’s archaeological park keeps an extraordinary chain of sites: the great cistern of Piscina Mirabile at Miseno, the shrine of the Augustales, a Roman theatre, the tomb long called Agrippina’s, and the cistern complex of Cento Camerelle. Between ruins lie footpaths over Monte Nuovo — a volcanic cone born in a single week in 1538 — the mythical waters of Lake Averno, and the eighteenth-century Casina Vanvitelliana on its lake island. A regional park ties the landscape together, making the area as rewarding to walkers and swimmers as to archaeologists.

Character and history

The Greeks called it the burning fields; Virgil set the gateway to the underworld by these waters, where Aeneas, in his telling, descended toward Lake Averno — a name from the Greek for “birdless”, earned by sulfurous exhalations that ancients believed kept the sky clear of birds. Agrippa made the coast a naval base for Rome’s Mediterranean fleets, and the shore towns of Misenum and Baia filled with engineers, emperors and their entourages. The ground never rested: in 1538 a new eruption built Monte Nuovo almost overnight beside the water, and the caldera’s slow inflation and deflation — bradyseism — continues today, occasionally prompting site closures that the park authority announces publicly. Layered over all this is everyday Campanian life: fishing quays at Miseno, beach clubs on the bay, and trattorias that serve what the boats bring in. The region-wide park authority, seated at Pozzuoli’s Rione Terra and established in its present form in 2016, manages the archaeology across the whole caldera.

What to see

At Miseno, descend into the Piscina Mirabile, the vaulted reservoir that supplied the imperial fleet, and climb to the Roman Theatre of Miseno; the semi-submerged Grotta della Dragonara lies by the beach. In Bacoli itself, the Cento Camerelle cisterns and the seaside Tomb of Agrippina face the water, while the Augustales Shrine preserves frescoed walls of an imperial cult hall. East of the bay, the Necropolis of Cappella spreads across Monte di Procida. Nature completes the circuit: hiking trails cross the pine-clad Monte Nuovo and the wider Phlegraean Fields Regional Park, and the elegant Casina Vanvitelliana stands on piles in Lake Fusaro. In town, the Pliny the Elder Municipal Library keeps the civic culture running.

How to experience

Structure a visit around two or three anchor sites rather than racing the whole coast. The park authority’s official portal, pafleg.cultura.gov.it, lists each site with current access; its notices matter here, since bradyseism-related closures do occur. Pair an underground visit such as the Piscina Mirabile with a lakeside or seaside walk — the Miseno beach promenade and the Monte Nuovo trails balance the day — and reserve time for a long seafood lunch on the Miseno waterfront. Drivers can loop the whole area in a day from Naples; public transport exists via the Cumana railway and EAV buses but rewards unhurried planning. Sun, sea and steps define the practical register: swimwear, walking shoes and a flexible schedule.

Campi Flegrei lies immediately west of Naples, reached by the Cumana line toward Torregaveta, by EAV buses, or by car via the Tangenziale. Sites are scattered between Bacoli, Miseno, Monte di Procida and Pozzuoli, so plan by cluster. Opening days and times vary by season and site, and closures can follow the caldera’s seismic activity — check pafleg.cultura.gov.it and the municipality of Bacoli (comune.bacoli.na.it) shortly before visiting. Most archaeological entries are individually ticketed with cumulative options across the Campi Flegrei circuit; confirm current prices on official channels rather than guidebooks. Summer weekends fill the beaches; mornings are calmest for both ruins and roads.

Nearby places

The Roman port town and amphitheatre of Pozzuoli anchors the caldera’s east, and the drowned resort of Baia sits at its centre. The first Greek colony of the mainland lies at Cuma, and the bay islands of Ischia and Procida are short ferry hops away.
