Bressanone

The oldest town in Tyrol, Bressanone carries a thousand years of prince-bishop rule in its stones: a baroque cathedral over a romanesque cloister, a princely palace of museums, arcaded streets that linked the Mediterranean to the German world, and the green mass of the Plose mountain lifting the whole ensemble into the Dolomites’ foreground.

Why visit

Bressanone (Brixen to its German-speaking inhabitants) offers a density of sacred and princely architecture out of proportion to its size. For over nine centuries this was the seat of prince-bishops who ruled a swathe of the Tyrol, and their town still reads as an ecclesiastical capital: the cathedral complex and its painted cloister, the Hofburg palace with cathedral treasure and nativity collections, collegiate and parish churches stacked along the lane from the old quarter of Stufles. Around them lies one of the pleasantest small historic centres in the Alps — arcaded lanes (the Lauben), a White Tower with a carillon, bridges over the fast Isarco, and gardens at the meeting of two rivers. Culture is supported by real institutions: a diocesan museum, a municipal gallery, a pharmacy museum of the town’s oldest apothecary. And the mountains are not scenery but an amenity — the Plose lifts run from the edge of town to high meadow trails and ski slopes. Between Innsbruck and Bolzano on the Brenner route, the city works as a destination in itself or as the most civilised of bases for the Eisacktal and the passes beyond.

Character and history

The bishopric of Brixen was founded in the early tenth century, and the bishops grew into territorial princes, governing until secularisation in 1803. Their town prospered as a stop on the trade route across the Brenner, which gave the arcaded main street its merchants’ houses and the city its mercantile polish. The cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta e San Cassiano, rebuilt in the eighteenth century in exuberant baroque over romanesque and gothic predecessors, anchors a whole sacred district: the cloister, a romanesque-gothic passage of frescoed bays linking cathedral, chapter house and baptistery; the baptistery of Saint John, visitable by guided tour; the collegiate church of Our Lady with its unusual organ; and the old parish church of Saint Michael in Stufles, the quarter across the Eagle Bridge that is counted the town’s oldest. The Hofburg, the prince-bishops’ residence facing the square, now holds the diocesan museum, the cathedral treasure — among the most important in the Alpine region — and the celebrated collection of nativity scenes. Bressanone’s modern fame carries a papal accent: Joseph Ratzinger, who spent decades of summer holidays nearby, returned as Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 and recited the Angelus from the cathedral square. Wine-growing on the sunny slopes, and the water and light festivals of recent years, keep the town alive beyond its museums.

The Bressanone Cathedral (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption and Saint Cassian) is the essential monument — vast, white and gilded — and the adjoining Cloister of Bressanone Cathedral is its quieter masterpiece, a quadrangle of gothic bays over romanesque arcading, frescoed by the workshops of the fifteenth century. The Baptistery of Saint John and the Collegiate Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche, Bressanone) complete the cathedral district on Cathedral Square (Bressanone). In the Hofburg (Bishop’s Palace of Bressanone) the Diocesan Museum of Bressanone shows the treasury and centuries of sacred art, the Nativity Scene Museum (Bressanone) gathers Tyrolean crib art, and the Hofburg Gallery (Bressanone) runs contemporary exhibitions in the palace. Down in the lanes, the White Tower (Museum in the White Tower, Bressanone) rises over the Portici Maggiori, the Pharmacy Museum (Brixen) preserves the Peer pharmacy’s historic fittings above the old apothecary, and the Brixen Municipal Gallery (Stadtgalerie) keeps a civic contemporary programme. Cross the Eagle Bridge (Bressanone) to Stufles (oldest quarter of Bressanone) and its Church of Saint Michael the Archangel (Bressanone), then end at the Rapp Gardens and the Eisack-Rienz confluence, where the two rivers meet under the town walls. The Plose mountain with the Plose cable car lifts the horizon — and hikers — to the ridges south of town.

How to experience

Take the cathedral district slowly: baroque interiors, then the cloister in slanting light, reward unhurried eyes, and the combined guided tours of Hofburg and cathedral district open rooms not visible otherwise. Reserve a morning for the museums in the palace — the treasury and the cribs are the two collections travellers remember — then drift the Lauben with a coffee stop under the arcades. In the afternoon, walk to Stufles over the Eagle Bridge and back through the Rapp gardens, or ride the Plose lifts to the high meadows and walk the panorama path above the town. December brings one of Tyrol’s traditional Christmas markets; summer brings the Water Light festival’s illuminated fountains. Eat Tyrolean with refinement: canederli, schlutzkrapfen, the local Eisacktal whites and the Törggelen taverns in autumn.

Practical planning

Bressanone stands on the Brenner railway about 40 minutes from Bolzano and under two hours from Innsbruck; the station is a flat fifteen-minute walk from the centre, and local buses serve the valley villages. The town is compact and walkable, though the cathedral district climbs gently from the river. The cathedral opens daily with free entry outside services, but the baptistery takes guided tours only and the museums keep seasonal hours — verify current times before planning a tight schedule. May–June and September–October are the fineset months; December is busy with the market; the Plose lifts run summer and winter timetables with spring and autumn closures. Book beds early for Advent and for the World Cup weeks at nearby ski areas.

Bolzano lies down-valley with the region’s principal museums; Brunico continues north into the Pusteria; the Ladin villages of Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva di Val Gardena climb west into the Gardena valley; and the high country of Alta Badia and the Dolomites begins over the passes.
