Bologna

1 private tour·52 attractions

Bologna is Italy’s learned, red-roofed contradiction: a medieval city that runs on the energy of Europe’s oldest university, sheltered by kilometres of porticoes now inscribed by UNESCO. It is a place to eat seriously, walk slowly and look up — at leaning towers, terracotta facades and frescoed ceilings — while living comfortably in the present tense.

Why visit

Few Italian cities reward the pedestrian so completely. The Porticoes of Bologna, added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021, knit the centre together under arcades that make sightseeing possible in any weather; their most spectacular branch, the Portico di San Luca, runs 3.8 kilometres and 666 arches uphill to a hilltop sanctuary. Around Piazza Maggiore stand the unfinished Gothic bulk of the Basilica of San Petronio, medieval palaces and the bronze Fountain of Neptune. The university, founded in 1088 and celebrated as the oldest in the Western world, still fills the streets with students, and the city’s kitchens — birthplace of tagliatelle al ragù, mortadella and tortellini — anchor its reputation as Italy’s food capital. Museums of archaeology, medieval art and modern painting, a hidden canal window and a monumental cemetery turned open-air museum give depth beyond the headline sights. It is a big-city break that never feels like a queue.

Character and history

Bologna’s colour is real: terracotta brick and ochre plaster earn it the nickname “la rossa”, and its politics have long matched its palette. Wealth in the medieval commune came from silk and learning alike, and the towers raised by rival families — nearly a hundred at one point — signalled both. Two survive in the skyline: the Asinelli Tower, which generations of visitors have climbed for the rooftop view, and the leaning Garisenda Tower, a fixture of local poetry that Dante knew. The university shaped everything: its students’ needs created the porticoes, which spread as private building code and civic habit; its anatomy lectures were held in the carved-wood Anatomical Theatre of the Archiginnasio, the university’s sumptuous former seat, its walls layered with students’ coats of arms. Church and commune negotiated in stone across Piazza Maggiore, where the city’s government still sits in the Palazzo d’Accursio (Municipal Palace). Modern Bologna layers industrial heritage and a famed resistance record over that medieval frame, and its appetite — intellectual and culinary — remains the through-line.

What to see

Start under the arcades of the centre: Piazza Maggiore and the neighbouring Palazzo del Podesta and Palazzo dei Notai, with the Salaborsa Library beneath the palace floor, its glass deck over Roman ruins. A short step away, the Archiginnasio and its Anatomical Theatre reward an unhurried visit. Walk Strada Maggiore past the seven churches of the Santo Stefano Complex (Seven Churches), an atmospheric layering of early-Christian halls, and into the Quadrilatero (historic market district), where delicatessens and the covered Mercato delle Erbe keep the food traditions loud. For art, the National Picture Gallery of Bologna holds the Emilian masters, the Civic Archaeological Museum of Bologna its Etruscan and Egyptian collections, and MAMbo – Modern Art Museum of Bologna the contemporary wing. Cross town to the little Little Window of Via Piella, the city’s famous peek at its buried canals. The long walk (or the tourist train) up the San Luca portico ends at the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca above the city. For a quieter register, visit the Charterhouse Monumental Cemetery of Bologna with its cloisters and sculpture, the Museum of the History of Bologna – Palazzo Pepoli, the ancient Botanical Garden and Herbarium of the University of Bologna, and the galleries of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna for an opera night.

How to experience

Take the city at portico pace. Mornings belong to the markets and bakeries filling the arcades with the smell of warm bread; organise a food walk through the Quadrilatero, tasting mortadella, aged parmesan and fresh pasta where it is made. Evenings fill the Osterie around Via del Pratello and the university quarter — Bologna’s nightlife is a student nightlife, which keeps it affordable and informal. Climb something: the Asinelli’s staircase opens periodically, but access has been suspended at times for conservation checks on the towers, so book ahead or verify status on the official tourism site before planning a visit. Join the pilgrims on the San Luca portico at sunset, when the whole plain turns gold. On Sundays, hire a bike for the long green ribbon of the Margherita Gardens and the hills beyond. Cooking classes are among the best-regarded in Italy — a half-day of tagliatelle and tortellini is a practical souvenir.

Practical planning

Bologna’s Guglielmo Marconi airport links to the centre by the Marconi Express monorail in about seven minutes; the railway station is a principal hub on the Milan–Florence and Venice–Rome axes, making car-free travel easy. The centre is compact and flat — the hills aside — and almost entirely walkable under cover. The Bologna Welcome Card bundles many museum entries and guided tours, which the official tourism site lists from around ten euros. Museum days and hours vary; several civic museums close Mondays. Book tower climbs, the San Luca train and popular restaurants ahead in high season. Visit in late April–June or September–October for warmth without the worst heat; the Christmas markets and the early-year food fairs are bonuses off-season.

Nearby places

The province around the city is unexpectedly rich: Imola pairs its motor-racing circuit with a Renaissance fortress, Grizzana Morandi sits amid the rocky landscapes that inspired Giorgio Morandi, and Marzabotto preserves both an Etruscan city and a solemn memory of wartime. Further afield, Sant’Agata Bolognese draws motor devotees, while Ravenna, Modena and Ferrara lie within an hour by train.
