Bergamo

Bergamo is a city in two acts: a walled hilltop Upper Town of medieval squares and Venetian ramparts, and a graceful Lower Town of arcades, museums and theatres spread across the plain beneath the Alps’ first slopes. Few Italian cities pack so much — UNESCO walls, a Renaissance chapel, a great picture gallery, an opera tradition — into so walkable a frame.

Why visit

Bergamo rewards travellers who want substance without a big-city grind. The Città Alta is one of the best-preserved hill towns in northern Italy: a single famed square, a warren of lanes, and six kilometres of Venetian walls you can walk end to end with the plains and mountains unrolling on either side. Below, the Città Bassa adds world-class art at the Accademia Carrara, the theatres of composer Gaetano Donizetti’s hometown, and a serious food culture of casoncelli, polenta and Alpine cheeses. Its airport makes it an easy first stop in Italy, and the Orobie foothills and the valleys beyond invite longer stays.

Character and history

The city began as Roman Bergomum on the road between the plains and the Alpine passes, was razed by Attila in the fifth century, and rose again as a seat of a Lombard duchy. As a medieval commune it joined the Lombard League, its feuds between local families — Colleoni against Suardi — giving it some of its defining architecture. In 1428 it passed to the Republic of Venice, which held it for nearly four centuries; the Serenissima’s great legacy is the belt of walls thrown up from 1561, so formidable that they never had to be tested in battle. In 2017 UNESCO inscribed them, with Bergamo at the head of the serial site of Venetian defence works.

Napoleon’s era ended Venetian rule in 1797 — the very year Gaetano Donizetti was born in the borgo of Canale, a coincidence the city has made the most of ever since. Austrian rule, Garibaldi, industrial growth and painful memory in 2020 have all left marks, but the essential division holds: upper town for history, lower town for modern life, joined by a funicular since 1887.

What to see

Anchor yourself on Piazza Vecchia (Old Square), framed by the Palazzo della Ragione and the tall Campanone (Civic Tower), whose bell still rings a hundred times each evening in an old civic ritual. On the adjoining Piazza Duomo cluster the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where Donizetti lies buried; the dazzling marble Colleoni Chapel, Renaissance mausoleum of the condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni; the polygonal Baptistery of Bergamo; and the Cathedral of Saint Alexander (Bergamo Duomo).

Walk the Venetian Walls of Bergamo at leisure — the circuit passes the white-marble Porta San Giacomo on the south and offers elevated views the whole way. Reach the Upper Town by the historic Bergamo–Upper Town Funicular, then ride the second funicular up to the San Vigilio Castle for the finest panorama of all.

Art lovers have two essential stops: the Accademia Carrara, founded in 1796 and holding masterpieces from Pisanello, Mantegna, Bellini, Raphael and Botticelli through Lotto and Moroni, and the adjacent GAMeC – Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Bergamo. Music pilgrims can visit the Donizetti Museum and the composer’s Birthplace of Gaetano Donizetti, and still hear him performed at the Teatro Donizetti. In the quiet quarter around Via Porta Dipinta, Palazzo Moroni and Gardens opens a private world of frescoed rooms and walled gardens.

How to experience

Give the Upper Town a full day on foot: square, churches, lanes, then the wall circuit toward sunset, when the light rakes the bastions. Ride up to San Vigilio for an aperitivo above the rooftops. Devote a second day to the Lower Town — the Carrara in the morning, a slow walk down the Sentierone and Via XX Settembre, an evening at the opera or a theatre tour. Eat deliberately: casoncelli alla bergamasca, polenta e brasato, stracciatella gelato, said to have been invented here. On a summer evening, join the passeggiata along the walls — it is the city’s shared terrace.

Practical planning

Bergamo sits about fifty kilometres north-east of Milan, with Orio al Serio airport at its edge and frequent buses into town. Trains connect to Milan, Lecco and Brescia. The funicular from Viale Vittorio Emanuele II is the pleasantest way up; parking is easiest in the Lower Town. The Upper Town is cobbled and steep in places — comfortable shoes matter, though the funicular and main routes mitigate the climb. Museums follow varied weekly closing days, so check hours on the official tourism portal (visitbergamo.net) and the Museo delle Storie network before planning interiors. Spring and autumn are ideal; August is hot and quiet.

Nearby places

Two characterful valley towns lie within easy reach in the same province: Clusone, with its medieval fiamminghi fresco and astronomical masterpieces, in the Serio valley, and Lovere, a painted borgo on Lake Iseo’s north-western shore. The UNESCO mill village of Crespi d’Adda and the spa town of San Pellegrino Terme also make straightforward day trips from the city.
