Belluno

Belluno rests on a promontory above the Piave at the gateway to the Dolomites, a cathedral town whose squares face peaks rather than plains. Venetian loggias, a Lombardo-designed duomo and a Baroque bell tower by Juvarra give it refinement, while the national park that shares its name begins at the city’s back door.

Why visit

Belluno suits travellers who want mountain air without abandoning urban grace. Its historic centre gathers around two linked squares, where a cathedral, a bishops’ stronghold and the long arcaded palace of the Venetian rectors compose one of the most dignified piazza ensembles in the Veneto. The setting does much of the persuasion: the Schiara range closes the horizon, the Piazzale Dantesco terrace hangs over the Piave valley, and trails of the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park start effectively from the town walls. Because Belluno is also the provincial capital, it offers services, museums and tables that small Dolomite villages cannot, yet its pace stays unhurried. Painters from Simone da Cusighe to Ippolito Caffi and the guardi-esque view-painters of the eighteenth century all worked here, and their city remains one of the Alps’ most civilised introductions.

Character and history

A first sacred building on the cathedral site was dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours by Bishop Felix in 548, during the Gothic wars, marking Belluno as an early episcopal seat. Under the bishops-counts the town was fortified, and the Palazzo dei Vescovi still carries the mass of that militant age. Venice ruled from the fifteenth century, and for nearly four hundred years the Palazzo dei Rettori housed the rectors who governed city and territory; its loggia grew in stages, with a design attributed to Giovanni Candi and completion in 1536 under rector Girolamo Rimondi. The cathedral itself, rebuilt after a fire from 1517 on a design given to Tullio Lombardo and enriched through the following two centuries, gained its Juvarra-designed Baroque campanile in 1732 and the rank of minor basilica in 1980. Devastating earthquakes in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries scarred the town and repeatedly tested the palaces, yet the centre survived with its medieval gates, the Torrione and Porta Dojona, intact. In 1865 the new Porta Dante replaced an older Venetian gate as a patriotic gesture of the new Italian order.

What to see

Piazza Duomo concentrates the essentials: the Belluno Cathedral (San Martino) with works by Cesare Vecellio, Jacopo da Ponte and Andrea Brustolon inside, its bell tower rising in Juvarra’s Baroque profile, and the octagonal Baptistery of Belluno beside it. Around the square stand the Palazzo dei Rettori, now the Prefecture, the Belluno Town Hall (Palazzo Rosso), the fortress-like Palazzo dei Vescovi (Bishops’ Palace), now an auditorium, and the medieval Torrione (Civic Tower). The Musei Civici di Belluno (Palazzo Fulcis) display a pinacoteca spanning Tintoretto and the Ricci in five floors of restored stucco, while the Archaeological Section of the Civic Museums (Palazzo dei Giuristi) carries the story from prehistory onward. Down the hill, Piazza dei Martiri and its liston lead through Porta Dante toward the viewpoint of the Piazzale Dantesco viewpoint, the classic balcony over the Piave. The medieval Porta Dojona opens the older quarters, where Piazza delle Erbe keeps its fountain and the frescoed Church of the Beata Vergine della Salute. The Church of San Rocco, Church of Santo Stefano, Church of Santa Maria dei Battuti and Church of San Pietro reward unhurried wandering, as does the neoclassical Belluno Municipal Theatre. Palazzo Piloni seats the provincial administration, and Palazzo Crepadona (Civic Library) holds a sixteenth-century palace’s worth of scholarship. Two civic memorials of movement and mountains close the list: the MEV – Museum of Veneto Emigration, a sober account of the exodus that shaped these valleys, and the park institutions in town, the Visitor Centre of Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park (Belluno), the botanically rich Dolomiti Bellunesi Natural History Museum with its historic herbaria, and the riverside Lambioi Riverside Park along the Piave.

How to experience

Follow the itinerary from Piazza Duomo down through Porta Dante to the Piazzale Dantesco at sunset, when the Piave bends gold below and the Schiara turns rose. Reserve a morning for Palazzo Fulcis and an afternoon for the park’s natural history museum, then ask at the visitor centre for a low-season trail; the Val Belluna edge paths suit a first day. Autumn brings the town’s concert and lecture seasons into the auditorium of the Bishops’ Palace.

Practical planning

Belluno is reached by rail from Padua and Venice through Feltre, with buses covering the Dolomite corridors; a car serves valley exploration best. The centre is steep in places, so comfortable shoes matter, and parking is easiest at the perimeter. Museum hours and the archaeological section’s openings vary seasonally, so check ahead. The city works well as a two-night base for the national park as well as a destination in its own right.

Cortina d’Ampezzo lies up the Boite valley to the north, and Cibiana di Cadore sits between the two, its painted houses and mountain museum making a natural halt.
