Asti

Asti, east of Turin on the Tanaro plain, is a city of medieval towers, Gothic brick churches and serious wine. Once one of Italy’s earliest and richest free communes, it now leads the region’s wine calendar with Barbera d’Asti and sparkling Moscato, and each September its Palio — the oldest horse-race palio in Italy — sends the whole city into period costume.

Why visit

Asti is one of those substantial Italian cities that never became a tourist circuit, which is precisely its appeal. The centre is dense with Romanesque and Gothic architecture: a great thirteenth-century brick cathedral, the collegiate church of the city’s patron saint, a scatter of noble towers, and Roman remains sheltered under glass. Between monuments sit wine bars pouring Barbera d’Asti, Moscato d’Asti and Asti Spumante from surrounding hills that rank among Piedmont’s most productive. September is extraordinary — the Palio, the Douja d’Or wine competition and the Festival delle Sagre stack into weeks of celebration — but at any season Asti pairs easily with the Langhe and Monferrato countryside that begins at its edge.

Character and history

The Romans built a castrum here in 124 BC on the site of older settlements, calling the town Hasta; it became a colony and then a municipality, and Emperor Honorius took refuge within its walls in 402 AD. After the Lombard duchy, Asti emerged as one of Italy’s very first free communes, minting its own coin from 1140. Barbarossa sacked it in 1155, but the city joined the Lombard League and reached its commercial and cultural peak in the thirteenth century, when its banker-merchants lent across Europe and its tower-houses crowded the skyline — the reason it is still called the city of a hundred towers. Later centuries brought Visconti and Montferrat lordships, the French crown, and finally the House of Savoy from 1531, with sieges scarring the city through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Enlightenment left its own legacy: Vittorio Alfieri, the founder of Italian tragedy, was born here in 1749, and the city keeps his birthplace as a museum. In the twentieth century, composer Paolo Conte gave Asti its soundtrack of wistful jazz.

Begin with the Asti Cathedral (Santa Maria Assunta e San Gottardo), the province’s largest Gothic church, then walk to the Collegiate Church of San Secondo on its elegant square, dedicated to the patron whose race gave the Palio its name. The San Pietro in Consavia Complex and Archaeological Museum pairs a rare Romanesque rotunda — once believed a baptistery linked to the Holy Sepulchre — with civic archaeological collections. Roman Asti survives in the covered Roman House (Domus Romana) and the Remains of the Roman Amphitheatre, while the Museum and Crypt of Sant’Anastasio layers excavations beneath the cathedral square. Climb the Troyana Tower (Clock Tower) for the panorama, visit Palazzo Mazzetti for the civic art gallery, and see the Palazzo Alfieri (Birthplace of Vittorio Alfieri). Give Asti a day and a half at minimum. Morning for the cathedral and towers, lunch on agnolotti al plin, bollito or the city’s famous海鲜-free takes on Piedmontese classics with a glass of Barbera, then the museums in the afternoon. If your dates reach the third Sunday of September, the Palio — bareback riders racing through Piazza Alfieri in colour-coded parish colours — is unmissable; the Douja d’Or and Festival delle Sagre run alongside it, turning the city into a food map of the province. Cellar visits and tastings are easy to arrange in town and in the surrounding Monferrato hills. Cyclists and walkers will find the wine routes of the Astigiano begin almost at the city gates. Asti sits about 55 kilometres east of Turin on the Milan–Turin railway line, with fast and frequent trains from both cities, and motorway access via the A21. The historic centre is compact and best explored on foot; market days and the September festival period bring heavy traffic, so favour park-and-walk then.
