Anagni

Anagni, the city of Popes, rides a ridge between the Monti Ernici and the Sacco valley an hour from Rome. Here Boniface VIII was seized in the outrageous “Schiaffo” of 1303, and here a Romanesque cathedral shelters one of Italy’s great fresco cycles. Medieval gates, cyclopean walls and quiet stone streets reward a slow visit.

Anagni delivers medieval Italy at full concentration without the queues of better-known centres. The cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata crowns the town with its cosmatesque marble floor, and beneath it the Crypt of San Magno spreads a shimmer of thirteenth-century frescoes over Old and New Testament scenes — a cycle restored in the 1990s and now one of the principal attractions of southern Lazio. The town’s place in history is outsized: capital of the Hernici, a papal residence that gave the Church Boniface VIII and other popes, and the stage of the Schiaffo di Anagni of 7 September 1303, when agents of the French crown laid hands on the pope in his own palace — a shock that echoed across Europe. Walls with four surviving gates, a frescoed medieval house said to have hosted Dante, and views across the Sacco valley toward the Ernici mountains fill out a day of unhurried discovery.

Character and history

Anagni was Anagnia, chief town of the Hernici, and legend ranked it among the “Saturnian cities” founded by Saturn alongside Alatri, Ferentino and Arpino; Rome subdued it in 306 BC and later made it a municipality. Its medieval fortune rested on the papacy: from the eleventh century popes and emperors met here, Alexander III proclaimed the excommunication of Frederick Barbarossa from the town in 1160, Innocent IV was elected in its cathedral, and the Caetani family made it their power base in the thirteenth century, when the city briefly counted tens of thousands of inhabitants. The drama came in 1303: Boniface VIII, locked in his struggle with Philip the Fair of France, was captured in the episcopal quarters beside the cathedral and, by tradition, struck — the “slap of Anagni” — before townsfolk freed him weeks later. The episode broke the pontiff within a month and marked the limits of medieval papal power. After the papal era the town declined to a few thousand souls, surviving on hill farming and craft, then re-entered modern history in fragments: a Jacobin departmental capital in 1798, a wartime command post in 1944, a province of Frosinone since 1927. Today it is a mid-sized city of about twenty thousand, its upper town still an island of medieval stone.

The heart of any visit is the cathedral complex. The Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata, raised from 1072 with Gothic refinements added in the thirteenth century, holds a cosmatesque pavement and the relic of Thomas Becket; the adjoining MuCA leads visitors through chapter house, sacristies, treasury, the Becket oratory and down into the Cripta di San Magno, whose vaults and columns carry the celebrated fresco cycle. Beside the cathedral, the Palazzo di Bonifacio VIII preserves the hall of the Schiaffo, and Piazza Innocenzo III below honours the great medieval pope. Walk the ring of gates: Porta Cerere, rebuilt neoclassically in 1841; Porta Santa Maria, once called the gate of idols, rebuilt in 1564; and Porta San Francesco on the south side. In the lanes between, the frescoed facade of Casa Barnekow stops most walkers mid-stride. Sacred architecture abounds: the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea e Cripta di San Vito, the austere San Pietro in Vineis, the Chiesa della Madonna di Loreto, and the Monastero ed Eremo di Santa Chiara above town. The Chiesa di San Giovanni de Duce e Sostruzioni Sillane exposes Roman masonry beneath its church, while outside the walls the megalithic Arcazzi and the Badia di Santa Maria della Gloria extend the itinerary; the Parco della Rimembranza at Piazza Cavour offers a green viewpoint. The small Casa Museo Tommaso Gismondi adds a note of contemporary art.

How to experience

Reserve ahead for the cathedral-museum circuit — visits are guided, last about an hour, and the crypt’s frescoes reward the slower pace; an audioguide app and 3D virtual tour exist if you want to prepare. Walk the medieval upper town late in the afternoon, when day visitors thin out and the lanes cool. Local cooking follows Ciociarian lines: hand-rolled pasta, cured pork, and peperonata dishes; look for trattorie near the gates rather than on the main piazza. History-minded travellers should read up on the Schiaffo before arriving — the palace hall lands harder with the story in mind — and the feast of San Magno in August brings the town’s liveliest days.

Anagni has its own railway station in the valley at Anagni-Fiuggi, connected to the upper town by bus and taxi; by car it sits just off the A1 motorway corridor, with parking below the walls.
