Alessandria

Alessandria is Piedmont’s plain-city: a grid of streets laid down in the twelfth century to defy an emperor, later ringed by one of Europe’s great star-shaped fortresses. Between the Cittadella’s ramparts, a cathedral with one of Italy’s tallest bell towers, the legacy of Borsalino hats and the battlefield of Marengo, the city rewards travellers who look past its workaday surface.

Why visit

Alessandria’s draw is authenticity plus two genuinely first-rank sights. The Cittadella, an eighteenth-century fortress of immense proportions, is now cared for by FAI, Italy’s national trust, and walking its six-pointed earth-and-brick geometry at dusk is memorable. In town, Piazza della Libertà — among the largest arcaded squares in Italy — anchors a compact centre of medieval and baroque palaces. Add the Marengo Museum on Napoleon’s 1800 battlefield, a museum devoted to the Borsalino hat that cinema made immortal, and the quirky claim to Italy’s first bicycle, and the city offers a day or two of serious substance. It is also an ideal low-traffic stop between Turin, Genoa and the Monferrato vineyards.

Character and history

The Lombard League founded the city in 1168 as a new stronghold against Frederick Barbarossa, naming it for Pope Alexander III; the legend of Gagliaudo, the wily peasant who supposedly outfoxed the imperial siege of 1174–75, is still commemorated at the cathedral. Under Savoy rule the city became a key military node, and from the 1720s engineer Ignazio Bertola raised the Cittadella across the Tanaro — a project so vast it required razing the old Bergoglio quarter. Napoleon’s victory at Marengo, fought on the city’s outskirts in June 1800, gave the district its name and briefly made Alessandria a French departmental capital. In 1821 the Risorgimento’s first insurrection began here, with the tricolour raised by Santorre di Santarosa. Industry followed: Borsalino, founded in 1857, turned the city into the world capital of fine felt hats, and a brewery worker named Carlo Micheles is credited with bringing Italy’s first bicycle to town in 1867 — hence today’s bicycle museum. The twentieth century was hard: heavy wartime bombing and the disastrous Tanaro flood of 1994, which the city rebuilt from.

What to see

Give the Citadel of Alessandria generous time; reaching it across the contemporary Meier Bridge, designed by Richard Meier, makes a good approach on foot or bike. Back in the centre, Piazza della Libertà frames the neoclassical Cathedral of Saints Peter and Mark with its monumental dome and soaring bell tower, the baroque Palazzo Ghilini, and the medieval Palatium Vetus (Palazzo del Governatore), the city’s oldest civic building. The Civic Museum of Palazzo Cuttica holds the civic collections, while the Borsalino Museum tells a century and a half of hatmaking history. Southwest of town, the Marengo Museum sits at the heart of the 1800 battlefield and explains the campaign that echoed all the way to the Arc de Triomphe. For smaller pleasures, seek out the ACdB – Alessandria City of the Bicycle Museum and the Synagogue of Alessandria, a monumental 1871 synagogue in the heart of the former ghetto.

How to experience

Alessandria suits the unhurried visitor. Start with the Cittadella — guided visits run on set days, so check the FAI or municipal programme — then return to the centre for the arcaded square and a long Piedmontese lunch: agnolotti, bagna cauda in season, and the local Monferrato wines. Cyclists have the best of it: flat riverside routes, the UNESCO Monferrato landscape nearby, and the famous roads ridden by Fausto Coppi within reach. Rainy-day options are strong — the hat museum, Marengo and the civic collections all sit indoors. Visit in late spring or early autumn for mild weather, and allow a full day if you include Marengo, which is a short drive from the centre.

Practical planning

The city stands on the Turin–Genoa railway line with frequent regional and long-distance services, and the A21/A26 motorway corridors put it within easy reach of Turin, Milan and Genoa. The centre is flat and walkable; the Cittadella is across the Tanaro, pleasant on foot or by bike via the Meier Bridge. The city is busiest during trade and cinema events; otherwise it is refreshingly uncrowded. Monferrato wine country, with Gavi and the Sacro Monte di Crea, lies within an easy drive.

Two same-province destinations make natural excursions. Acqui Terme is the region’s Roman spa town, where boiling water rises in the main square amid Roman remains and historic baths — about 35 kilometres southwest. Casale Monferrato to the north brings a handsome riverfront centre, baroque palaces and one of Europe’s most beautiful synagogues. Both are comfortable half-day or overnight trips from Alessandria, and the roads between them thread through UNESCO-listed Monferrato vineyard country.
