Albano Laziale

1 private tour·14 attractions

Albano Laziale crowns a crater rim in the Castelli Romani, half an hour south of Rome, on ground legend calls the mother-city of Rome itself. A legion’s camp, an emperor’s estate and a papal retreat left their mark: monumental Roman cisterns, a legionary gate, paleochristian catacombs and a baroque cathedral — a living town first, an open-air archaeology museum second.

Why visit

Albano makes an easy and rewarding day out of Rome, and a calmer base in the Alban Hills than its celebrity neighbours. Its claim on the imagination is ancient: tradition placed legendary Alba Longa here — the city of Romulus and Remus’s ancestry — and the town’s coat of arms still carries the white sow of Virgil’s omen, earning its motto, Mother of Rome. The verifiable past is just as rich. In 202 AD Septimius Severus stationed the Legio II Parthica here, the only legion permanently camped near Rome, and the modern town grew directly out of its Castra Albana: the amphitheatre is the only one in the Castelli Romani, and the great five-naved Cisternoni, fed by three aqueducts, supplied the town’s water into the late nineteenth century. Add catacombs on the Appian Way, a baroque cathedral on an elegant piazza, and views over Lake Albano, and Albano rewards a full day without the crowds of Castel Gandolfo next door.

Character and history

The Ager Albanus around the lake was villas and vineyards long before the soldiers came. Pompey the Great owned a residence in the area; Emperor Domitian folded local estates into the imperial Albanum Caesaris, whose monumental core survives in the Villa Barberini grounds at Castel Gandolfo. Septimius Severus turned the hill into a legionary fortress, and when the empire’s administration dissolved, the Castra’s walls became the skeleton of a town. In the Middle Ages the Savelli family held Albano from 964 onward, ruling from their fortress-palace until papal rule returned in 1697; their Palazzo Savelli now serves as the town hall. The realignment of the Appian Way in 1780 brought new traffic, Pius VII made the town a papal government seat in 1816, and “Laziale” was appended in the 1870s to set it apart from its namesakes. The twentieth century scarred it deeply — Allied bombings of February 1944 destroyed much of the centre, earning the town a Silver Medal of Civil Merit — and reconstruction has since layered modern streets over the ancient grid. Today it is a substantial town of nearly forty thousand, its squares busy with commuters and students as much as visitors.

What to see

Start on Piazza Pia, the civic heart, where the baroque facade of Albano Cathedral — rebuilt by Carlo Buratti between 1719 and 1722 in peperino and travertine — fronts the elegant square. A short walk away stands Porta Praetoria, the monumental peperino gate of the legionary camp, dramatically uncovered when wartime bombing cleared the buildings that had grown against it. The Cisternoni of Albano, a vast brick cistern behind modest doors, astonishes visitors who step inside; the nearby Baths of Cellomaio belong to the same Severian building programme. Along the line of the ancient road, the freshly restored Tomb of the Horatii and Curiatii — a Roman mausoleum linked by legend to the twin duel — reopened as a visited archaeological area in April 2026, and the adjacent Catacombs of St. Senator, Christian burial grounds cut into old pozzolana quarries, extend the story underground. In the centre, the Church of Santa Maria della Rotonda sits within a Roman nymphaeum, the Church of St. Peter marks an early cathedral site, and the Civic Museum of the Second Parthica Legion in Palazzo Savelli interprets the legionary past; the Diocesan Museum of Albano Laziale beside the cathedral holds the diocese’s sacred art. For green air, the Villa Doria Pamphili Park preserves the grounds of a baroque villa, and the churches of the Capuchin convent and of Cecchina complete the picture.

How to experience

Combine Albano with the lake circuit: walk down to Castel Gandolfo for the crater-rim panorama, then return through Albano’s Roman circuit with the civic museum as your guide — guided tours run on designated days when the archaeological sites reopen. Time a visit for the feast of San Pancras in May, the town’s patronal celebration, when the streets fill with processions and food stalls. Eat as the locals do: porchetta and the wines of the Colli Albani from a local frasca. The town’s compact grid pairs naturally with a stroll to the belvedere over the lake; cyclists can follow the Appian stretch out of town towards Ariccia’s famous bridges.

Practical planning

Albano is served by frequent trains from Rome’s Termini (about half an hour to the Albano Laziale station) and by buses from the Anagnina metro hub; the Castelli Romani ring road links it to Frascati, Grottaferrata and Nemi by car. The centre is hilly — peperino kerbs and ramps — so wear good shoes. Opening times for the catacombs, cisterns and the Horatii and Curiatii area are seasonal and guided-visit based; check the municipality’s luoghi pages and the Soprintendenza’s announcements before travelling. Spring and autumn suit the hills best; summer weekends bring Roman day-trippers, so come early.

Nearby places

The Castelli cluster around Albano invites hopping: Castel Gandolfo with the papal palace across the lake, Ariccia and its Bernini ensemble down the Appia, Nemi above its crater lake, and Frascati and Grottaferrata on the northern slope — all within a short drive, with Marino adjacent on the lake’s north shore.
