Montecatini Terme is Europe’s grand spa architecture at its most complete: Liberty-era drinking halls and treatment palaces set in a monumental thermal park, inscribed by UNESCO among the Great Spa Towns of Europe. Mineral waters have drawn visitors for centuries, Verdi among them, and a historic funicular still climbs to the medieval borgo of Montecatini Alto.

Why visit

Montecatini is a town built around water and the rituals of taking a cure. Four springs — Leopoldina, Tettuccio, Regina and Rinfresco — rise from depths of sixty to eighty metres and feed a ensemble of grand spa buildings arranged through one of the handsomest thermal parks in Europe. In 2021 the town joined UNESCO’s World Heritage List as part of “The Great Spa Towns of Europe,” a serial site spanning eleven towns in seven countries, honoured as the fashionable, international face of a phenomenon that flourished from around 1700 to the 1930s.

Travelers come for three overlapping pleasures: the architecture of the great thermal palaces, the working cures and pools that still use the mineral-rich waters, and the easy excursion on a Victorian funicular to the hilltop castle village above. Between treatments, parks and cafés, this is the rare Italian town whose main sight is the atmosphere itself.

Character and history

The thermal waters here were known in antiquity, but Montecatini’s world fame was built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when the Grand Dukes of Tuscany reorganized the baths and Europe’s elites arrived for the season. Royalty, politicians, financiers and artists paraded along the Viale dei Bagni; Giuseppe Verdi was a frequent guest. The spa buildings that line the park today — the Tettuccio, the Excelsior, the Redi, the Tamerici, the Leopoldine and the Regia — are magnificent palaces in Liberty and neo-Gothic style, drinking halls and treatment galleries designed as much for society as for therapy.

That social history is exactly what UNESCO recognised: the Great Spa Towns illustrate an urban model devoted to curative, therapeutic, recreational and social functions, with pump rooms and drinking halls set in carefully managed parks, supported by hotels, theatres, casinos and funiculars. Montecatini keeps the whole apparatus in working order. The Tettuccio Thermal Baths, the town’s emblem, still dispenses its waters; the Excelsior Thermal Baths and Redi Thermal Baths run modern cures and pools within historic shells; the ceramic-decorated Tamerici Thermal Baths and the Leopoldine Thermal Baths preserve earlier chapters, the latter long undergoing restoration.

What to see

The heart of the visit is the great Thermal Park and the sequence of buildings within and beside it. Begin at the Tettuccio to drink the waters beneath its glass and stucco pavilion, then cross the green to the Regia and along to the Tamerici in the pinewood, where Galileo Chini’s ceramics glow. The Regia Thermal Baths sit within the Tettuccio park, and the Leopoldine Thermal Baths face Viale Verdi, the elegant promenade that links the whole spa quarter.

For the classic excursion, board the Montecatini Funicular Railway, opened in 1896 and still running with its original red iron cars in perfect Liberty style; it climbs to Montecatini Alto, a medieval borgo with castle remains and arcaded piazzas above the plain. In town, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta on Viale Verdi is a twentieth-century church raised on the site of a nineteenth-century predecessor, and the MO.CA Civic Gallery of Contemporary Art, opened in 2012 inside the twentieth-century town hall, adds a contemporary note to the Liberty ensemble.

How to experience

Give the town its ritual. Walk Viale Verdi end to end in the evening passeggiata, dress decently for a coffee under the Tettuccio arcade, and if you have time book an actual cure or a thermal pool session — the waters support a full range of drinking, bathing and mud treatments, and the pool is fed at a natural 33°C. Treatments need medical consultation and advance booking, so arrange before arriving.

Ride the funicular up in the late afternoon, when the light rakes the Valdinievole, and eat in Montecatini Alto’s little squares as the day visitors leave. Nature-minded travellers can add the Grotta Maona on the town’s edge, and the great marsh of the Padule di Fucecchio nearby, one of Italy’s largest inland wetlands and a rich site for birdlife. Those with a car can reach the coast and Pistoia in half an hour each.

Practical planning

Montecatini sits on the Pistoia–Lucca railway line, with regional trains from Florence taking about an hour and Pisa roughly the same; the station is a flat walk from the spa quarter. Driving is easy from the A11 motorway, and car parks ring the pedestrianised centre. The town is level and comfortable for walkers, with the park and spas all within ten minutes of each other.

The thermal establishments keep different seasonal calendars: some buildings open only for the summer drinking-cure season, others operate wellness programmes much of the year, so check the Terme di Montecatini site for what is active during your dates. Spring and autumn are pleasant and less crowded; July and August bring the international cure crowd and lively promenades. Sundays are quiet and, in the park, restorative.
